I don’t feel like we are doing anything. This is our 3rd year homeschooling but our first using CM. So that may be the problem But I feel like the boys need more practice with spelling and I need to get more history in. I’m used to the old fashioned “memorize the list” type spelling. We are using spelling wisdom and it’s a BIG change. They are NOT natural spellers. They mispell the easiest words. “know” is spelled “now”.

History is the guide from SCM  for module #1. My boys HATE reading so it has been like pulling teeth to get them to do their suggested reading from the guide. I have assigned liturature but that has been crazy as well. I don’t have a clue how to get them to read without having a fight and a major headache afterwards. They LOVE it when I read to them though. So on some of the assignments we have taken turns reading, but I have four children and that is too much to do with everyone of them everyday along with the other books I have been reading to them. We are using Easy Grammar for the boys’ language arts it’s working well, but I would like to have more “meat” in their language study. Math is NOT going well for the boys either. MUS is our chosen math curriculum. We have used it from the beginning and have just now started having problems. My ds13 is just barely in Epsilion and my soon to be 12 year old is in Delta. We are having to reteach the times tables to the 12 year old and my 13 year old has been stuck on the same lesson in Epsilion since the beginning of the school year. One minute he knows how to do it, the next day he can’t do it. I don’t know if I should move on or stay on the lesson.. He sometimes does this when he gets bored.. I’m feeling extreemly discouraged and wonder if I should even being doing this. I feel like my kids are extremely behind in their studies. Dad talks about letting them go back to High School. That’s in a few years!!! I want to get them through pre-algebra before they go back.. I don’t know how that’s going to be possible. What should I do???

My boys are younger, but I have felt exactly like you do many times.  A great book is Lies Homeschool Moms believe.  On the reading, mine hated it last year.  I stepped back and prayed, and decided I was asking too much of him.  In 2nd grade I expected him to read 3rd grade books 60 pages in a sitting.  (It was our 1st year homeschooling)  Last year in 3rd grade I backed up a lot on the number of pages but not on the type of books.  So, towards the end of the year I knew something needed to change, and I thought more about what books he should read.  We went to books that were accompanied by audio tapes.  I let him read along while listening to the audio tape on harder books. You could try this with the History Books.   Then the next book I chose would be a little easy for him to encourage him to like it.  He loved Pinnochio, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, and The Sign of the Beaver.  Today he just finished the Boxcar Children without complaint.  Also, what if you chose the younger history books than their age level.   In addition to Easy Grammar we did Language Lessons by Queen Homeschool.  I wouldn’t worry about Spelling, some people are just not natural spellers.  Math is either they dont have their facts mastered or an issue with laziness.  My oldest does not want to do anything that requires effort, and math does.  Whenever he complains over math I double his work.  This stopped the complaints.  Hope this helps a little, know that you are not alone at all.
