My dd who just turned 10 has been working on cursive in her Hymns in Prose Copybook. Her hand always gets tired after doing only two lines of copywork in this book. Should I have her do two lines, rest, and then do two more lines later in the day OR is two lines per day still plenty at this point?
Lishie, a lot of the answer to that question depends on the child’s fine motor skills and individual development. You’re doing the right thing in not forcing her to do more when her hand is physically tired. While it’s true that some of writing is about building up stamina, it should not be painful. She will need to be able to write more than two lines when she transitions to written narrations, so you’ll want her to gradually build up to more, but be careful you’re not causing physical pain in her hand.
If she can give that writing her best effort and you want her to develop stamina, go ahead and do the two shorter sessions at two different times during the day. If you think having to do some handwriting twice during the day will cause physical pain or contribute toward a sloppy effort or bad attitude, just do the one session.
I’m no expert at this, but what about her hand position? Could that be part of the cause? You could try a different position and/or maybe she is just holding the pencil too tightly. I should look this up, but aren’t you supposed to hold it loosely enough that it can be easily jerked out by the teacher? I’m sure you’ve probably already considered that…but just in case, I’ll throw it out there.
