Has SCM ever considered compiling a CD of all of the recommended Hymns in a version that the words are clear & easy for kids to listen to & sing along? I love the Hymns studies, I use YouTube to let the kids hear the hymn, but it always takes awhile to find a good version of the hymn we are on, hard to find it if we want to review, slow sometimes if our internet connection isn’t good…I am not the most technically gifted, so I would love to be able to put in a CD and just play the song, or even better play through all we’ve learned. It would be worth the cost to save me the time. Or does anyone have better advice. I realize I could buy CDs with the hymns but I would have to research which hymns are on specific CDs, and I wouldn’t know if it was easy to understand the words, etc. Any advice? Thanks!

I love your idea for a CD.  Until that happens though you can go to net hymnal and at least get the tune for the hymns you are learning.   We have dial-up internet(no YouTube for us) and it works beautifully. Plus it has a little info on the authors and the composers. As an example here is the one we have been singing this month:  http://nethymnal.org/htm/w/e/r/wereston.htm

It would be great to record all the hymns and then create a playlist of hymns we have learned so far.  I think the hymns by Joni ( Hymns for a Kids Heart )  are easy for kids to listen to and understand the words. Maybe it would be a start for you.

I concur about Hymns for a Kids Heart: http://www.amazon.com/Hymns-Kids-Heart-Vol-1/dp/1581345054. This price seems quite a bit higher than I paid used, I’d search if wanting it.  But this book has really simplified our hymn learning…I can just grab it and have the hymn, a bio on the author, and cd all in one place. HTH some:) Gina

We wrestled with doing Hymn Study on a weekly basis until I found Joni’s books. I felt I could not afford them new so I just kept my eye out for them. I got them at our local used bookstore for $1 each!!! They have been a blessing for us.

I have made a CD for specific hymn songs. We read last year Mr. Pipes and the British Hymn Makers slowly through the year. At the beginning of the year I looked up each hymn and downloaded them from I Tunes and made a couple of CD’s one for the house and one for the vehicle. We didn’t know all the hymns in the book to start with but we learned them a little every week. So making a CD of the hymns you want to focus on is quite helpful to have your year go well. Plus you can pick the artist you enjoy listening to.

    We have this: http://www.christianbook.com/the-kids-hymnal-sing-along/9781598562156/pd/562156?item_code=WW&netp_id=472650&event=ESRCG&view=details

I haven’t compared it to SCM’s list of hymns, but it has quite a few!  We are using Hymns for a Kid’s Heart this year, but I plan on using the DVD next year.

I was going to suggest downloading individual songs from iTunes.  You would still have to search for the ones you liked, but then you could have customized playlists and burn the cd’s whatever way you wanted.

Thanks for these ideas!  We struggle to “search” out a good, clear version of the hymn over here too.  Sometimes it can become a real giggle-fest trying to find one that works!  There are some pretty odd versions out there of some very standard hymns.

I have had success with a variety of things – Hymns for a Kids’ Heart are great, but so are your favorite versions from your favorite artists. Our CM co-op is using Chris Rice’s version of It is Well with My Soul right now. It’s lovely. Last year, we used a completely new tune for Abide with Me that my friend wrote. Use what you love! It’s pretty easy to google a quick run down of the background, if interested.
