I have visited this forum daily for probably 1-2 years and never really posted anything. Here goes with my first entry. I have one dd age 9 and most everything we do falls under CM methods. I have yet to add in Hymn study and I was wondering how some of you do Hymn study in your home? Do you do it every day or just once or twice a week? Dd loves to sing and I think this would be something she would enjoy. Also where do you get your information about each individual hymn? For example – when it was written, by whom, etc. I look forward to all your wonderful insights.
We have a book called Then Sings My Soul with the sheet music and lots of info behind the actual hymns…we’ve also googled for info which usually works just as well.
I would say we actually go over/sing our hymns 3 out of 5 mornings a week during bible time. You’ll be amazed how quickly they pick them up. My 4 yr old (who is not even really “doing” school) walks around singing our hymns constantly…I love it:)
We do hymn study once per week here…by the end of 9-12 weeks it is perfectly memorized by all. Take about 10 mins. Sometime the older children will also choose to do some copywork from one of our hymns if there is a refrain that really speaks to them.
We use Hymns for a Kid’s Heart by Joni Eareckson Tada and Bobbie Wolgemuth. It has a brief bio and devotional for each hymn, along with the story behind the hymn and a CD with all the featured songs on it. My girls love it! I got it through CBD. There are several volumes and it is reasonably priced.
Also, in iTunes there is a free download of Hymn stories. It is called LifeSpring Hymn Stories and is free through iTunes podcast. You can find it in the iTunes store.
