Hello all.  Can someone help me here?

I taught my oldest two kids tranditional manuscript, then cursive.  My 3rd child, I tried the cursive first approach using the New American Style simplified cursive in her Kindergarten year.  My 3rd child has okay cursive (when she tries, but even that’s not great) but very very rough manuscript, as she’s not had much instruction in it…and now she’s formed all sorts of bad habits – improper strokes, mingling uppercase and lowercase letters, terribly messy.  This past year, her first grade year, she did some copywork, but no separate handwriting program.  My problem is this, her handwriting, and even number formation, are terrible.  And this year, I am starting with another K, a son.  He’s been writing for a year or so, playing around, learning his letters, etc.  So he now knows mostly manuscript too.  I’d like good clear instruction for him and something I can use for my 3rd kiddo, a DD, who will be in 2nd grade this year.  Someone suggested Penny Gardner’s Beautiful Handwriting, which I bought for 7$ when it was on sale at CurrClick.  I like the youtube videos, and the penmanship is SO pretty, I think I’d like to use it to help my own writing.  But I am wondering with older kids who help their siblings, and with someone who needs remediation, and new kids coming up, will I just cause more confusion and choas by introducing ANOTHER style of handwriting?

Would it just be better to bite the bullet and order some of the HWT printing materials?  If so, where would be best to start my DD – at the first grade printing book?  I can get my son the the K book, but does it teach upper and lowercase letters?  I think I’d even consider getting my pre-schooler the pre-K book.  What I like about this program is the wood pieces, the dough cards,  and the slate.  I think the rest is pretty gimmicky.  How important are the teacher’s manuals?  I think I will probably need the other sensory ideas for these last three kids of mine.  But I find the HWT website very confusing, and I didn’t get much help from the company when I email them – just an attempt to sell me more stuff.  Also, the the whole 2-line thing ever a problem, and do you really need the paper?

My finances are pretty limited, and I just want to help my kids have decent penmenship…without causing further confusion.

    Thanks in Advance,

    Amy

Well, after a couple of different things, I found the Penny Gardner Italics is working best for us – and as you already have it…

Most of the italic print is very similar to manuscript (the e and x are different for sure….)…

So I’d go for that.  The videos made it easier for my kids, and for me, as it wasn’t “ME” retraining them on their letters.

but then – I’m probably the person who recommended it to begin with to you!   But if finances are limited, I’d go with it, as you already own it…

Amy, does the Penny Gardner materials require copywork without tracing lines or tracing dots? If it doesn’t, my concern is that your dd won’t improve with pure visual copying; she probably needs tracing lines or dots, not free-hand copying.

We switched to Penny Gardner half way through last year and love it.  My 6 year old still has messy writing, but it’s better than before …. I was just turning out some old paperwork today and realised how much it has improved.

Penny Gardner does use tracing dots – they’re a little different from the regular dot lines. You can see them on the free sample page
