My husband’s birthday is in a few weeks and I was wanting to buy him one of these two books, Hungry Planet What the World Eats or What I Eat Around the World in 80 Diets.
He picked up the book Material World several years ago and really loved it. He has even used it quite a bit as a family worship supplement for the kids to show other people groups around the world, discuss poverty, reinforce thankfulness, etc. He is also quite interested in health and diet so I’m thinking that these books may be the perfect gift for him :o)
Anyway, not sure from the Amazon description which one to get? Or both, would that be redundant? I really like the coffee table book quality of Material World with all of the pictures, great for adults and kids…..
Hungry Planet is closer in format to Material World. It goes around the world and shows one week’s worth of food for the different families in various countries, usually photographed in their kitchens (or whatever areas they use to cook and eat their food).
What I Eat is also interesting, but it is more focused on a typical day’s meals for individuals in different countries and different jobs.
We own Hungry Planet as of very recently, and it’s an awesome book! We have all found it very interesting. I’m keeping it on the coffee table, and all of us have picked it up and browsed off and on this last week. We are also using it in conjunction with our map drills. One child is doing Asia; the other is doing Middle East. We choose a country that they already know how to label on their maps and read about it, if it’s included in Hungry Planet or Material World.
If you think your hubby would enjoy these types of books, be prepared to steal them for use in your homeschool too!
We borrowed Hungry Planet from the library, and we loved it. We are currently using Material World. I would highly recommend Hungry Planet if he enjoyed Material World.
