I would suggest keeping some kind of record of what you do for a few reasons. 1 – In case there is ever any question from social services or whatnot. It’s important to be able to show that you are really educating your kids. 2 – As a method of evaluation, a record is very important. 3 – For posterity’s sake, it’s like yours and my report cards.
I keep basic records for all my children but only attempt a transcript for grades 7 and up. And I did grades 7 and 8 more for “practice” so I wouldn’t be overwhelmed when we suddenly hit grade 9. Realistically you will not need to submit transcripts for earlier grades for the purposes of college admission, so all you’d need to keep record-wise for earlier years are 1) things that will help you (you WILL in a few years forget exactly what you covered this year, I promise, lol) and 2) things you need to satisfy your state laws.
And don’t forget to check with potential colleges to find out what their requirements are. Some may want a transcript, but others may want a portfolio. Better to know ahead of time than to be surprised when your child tries to apply to a college.
I forgot to mention that I keep a basic portfolio w/ samples of work from beginning, middle and end of year and a list of what we’ve covered. I’m not worried about transcripts yet. 🙂
I have some testing and Record keeping questions. My kids are 8,7,5 and 2yrs. They’ll be doing 3rd, 2nd, kinder and potty training 🙂 this year respectively. So… I feel a bit late in asking this, but just this year I want to start keeping records for them. Here are my questions.
For those that do the portfolio method…How do you make/keep a portfolio of each child’s work? Are all topics and areas included in the portfolio? Do you include tests and test scores as well? How do you store them? Do you put it all in a 3 ring binder?
For those that don’t use a portfolio method… What do you use for testing your child? What computer program or other record keeping method do you use to keep it all organized?
Oops, just noticed this thread was intended for High School aged kids. Mine are elementary. Is there a more appropriate thread that I missed in my search earlier?
