Ok so my lettuce is wonderful and plump, had salad with dinner last night and ahhh so nice to have fresh greens again. Here’s my thing, I spent so much time rinsing all the dirt and sand off it, how do you do it so you don’t spend an hour cleaning it before you eat it?
Also, did celery for the 1st time this year and wondering how I will know when it’s ready to be havested?
Fun for today will be going to our local strawberry patch and picking our yearly 100 lbs of strawberries to bring home, clean and freeze for the next year of use!
I can’t answer the celery question as I don’t grow that; however, I can the greens one.
If you don’t already have one, get a large salad spinner. I have this one by OXO and it’s been great. Fill it up
with the greens and a solution of half water-half vinegar. Let it sit for about a minute or so, swirling it around with your hand. Then let it drain and start spraying with the sink sprayer until the water runs clear. Then start spinning; you’ll have to dump the water that comes out into the bottom a few times. Just keep spinning till the greens are crisp feeling. Then wrap them in paper towels adn place in ziplock.
That’s it. My children usually do this job as it is fun to pump the top.
How long do the greens stay fresh in the ziplock bags? I hate opening my refrigerator bin half the time because stuff seems to go bad so quickly. I’m wondering if I’m storing them incorrectly.
Well, Sue; I haven’t timed it, but I get at least two wks, sometimes more, If it’s my greens, I don’t wash them till I’m ready to use them, that makes them last longer. The paper towel absorbs the moisture, so keep an eye on it, so when it becomes damp, remove it and replace it.
The key is spinning as much moisture out as possible. Another option is to use your Food Saver if you have it, but I have one and I don’t think I’d haul it out everytime. I just spin over and over, put the paper towel in there, squeeze as much air as I can out and put it in the crisper section.
