We’re doing Module 1 this year (dd6), but for literature we had already read several of the books listed, so I’m sort of coming up with a list as I go along.  (Not the best “plan”, I know)  Anyway, we’ll finish Little House in the Big Woods tomorrow (hopefully!) and I’m undecided if I should go right to the next Little House book or if I should switch and do something different…maybe not returning to Little House until next year.  What do you think?

I have just been reading straight through them with dd 5 this year – we are up to On the Shores of Silver Lake now.  We did skip Farmer Boy (for now) since she wanted to hear more about Laura and Mary so we’ll come back to that one at some other point down the line.  We do read picture books and other stories here and there so it isn’t the ONLY literature we are reading this year, however.  I’d say gage your kids interest with the first one and take it from there if you want to keep going with all of them now, or save the rest for later.  My dd is really enjoying them.  (Actually, she’s taken to calling me “Ma” and dh “Pa” and herself “Laura”, and her sister “Mary”, and her brother “Jack” (since unfortunately there is no boy in the Ingalls family.  Thankfully he is only 3 and I don’t think he realizes that he is being called by the dog’s name….)  LOL!

    Enjoy,

I can’t imagine reading only one LH book a year. The characters become a part of you and you want to continue. I’d say if you daughter wants to continue by all means do. That’s what we did (and also played Laura…my son was Laura though…).

We continue through; per request of the children but also because they are so connected. I vote keep going…

I say keep going as well. Most families find they read the Little House books over and over. We are almost always reading one, along with other Literature Read Alouds and Picture Books.

We also have them on audio, and a lot of nights the kids pick them to fall asleep to.

They really do just become a part of what you do as a family, not Read Aloud. 🙂

This is all so true!  We read through the Little House series last year.  Now we own two of them on CD and my older daughter has read a few of them on her own.  We have a MILLION books in this house (a slight exaggeration) and she comes back to those again and again in her free time.  They are a treasure and I think you’d lose that intimacy by breaking them up.

Enjoy!! You only get to read through them the “first time” once.  May it bring you joy and togetherness. 🙂

Just wanted to put in a plug for Farmer Boy.  I almost skipped it years ago, thinking my children would prefer sticking to stories about Laura and her family and almost missed a treasure!  REally, it is one of the top two of the series in my opinion.

I agree with the previous poster!  Farmer Boy is actually my favorite. 🙂

yeah Farmer Boy is my favorite too… but we read it last since we wanted to continue the Ingals story.  If it were me I’d just read one after the other, not taking breaks.  We did opt to skip the last 2 in the series (These Happy Golden Years and The First Four Years) since my girls are young (6 and 5) and the books are about Laura’s courtship and marriage.

These Happy Golden Years is my second favorite. 🙂 We skipped The First Four Years because of the depressing nature of the book. It wasn’t originally written to be part of the series and I like happy endings. Lol So I ignore that The First Four Years was ever published. I wish they would have published it as a stand alone if they really felt the need to do so. I really feel like they should have left the manuscript alone. I think Laura wouldn’t want it to be part of the series.

Just one of my many soap boxes…forgive me…lol

I don’t think The First Four Years is depressing.  It has hard events in it surely, but that’s real life.  Everything doesn’t always turn out just the way we think or hope it will.  Doesn’t mean it’s depressing.  Just means it’s hard.  I think the example of the marriage of Laura and Almanzo lasting so long and their obvious affection for each other shows that although those events were hard, they came out of them fine.  That’s not depressing, that’s good role modeling!

Our library has the whole series on audio cd sets. So we have listened to the first one in the van. Kids loved it and we also “play” Little House and I am “Ma”. ds is “cousin Peter”, but he would rather be a bear!

So my question is if we are missing out on something by doing audiobooks rather than myself reading them aloud from the paper books to my two children?
