I’ve read the SCM list of narration ideas. I’m working on a list of my own that will work with an older child (15yo), who because of some learning challenges, has not learned the skill of oral narration. I want to go back with him and take it piece by piece and try to build this skill, but I fear that part of the reason I don’t get good narrations is because he resists the idea of giving them, thinking they are too silly. Or maybe that’s just the front he gives becuase they are too hard. I dont’ know. In the past we have used illustrations, but that can become too time consuming when you are having to work passage by passage. (or maybe sentence by sentence at times. I’m not really sure where he needs to be)
So, i’m looking for creative ways to “sneak” in oral narrations without him realizing. Some of the ideas I have so far are:
- model something and show it to dad or his HS friends (an explanation always occurs)
- create a visual display report and present it to dad or his friends
- illustrate text on a page by finding, or creating, appropriate artwork and photos. Then explain his choices.
- write a keyword outline and tell the story from that. (for some reason an intermediate step seems to help…maybe because of his LDs)
- similarly, do the briefest sketch possible of each sentence or passage, then narrate.
