We just got back from the library’s Summer Reading Program. They’re having a contest–making musical instruments. Deadline: next Wednesday. Ds saw a demo of the tuba at the library and that’s what he wants to make. He’s five and so-so when it comes to glue and scissors. We are encouraged to use recyclables and/or basics (don’t go out and buy anything). Any suggestions?

    Thanks,

    Karen

    Karen,

My husband is out of town, but I e-mailed him about this post because he is a tuba player. Here is his response:

    > Sounds like fun.

    > If it is a scale model, I start with a large paper cup with a paper plate

    > on top for the bell. Then use a combination of toilet paper and paper

    > towel rolls for the main tubing. You could then use old pens for the

    > smaller tubing and even some ball point pens for moving valves. The trick

    > will be making the curves on the top and bottom.

He would love to see a picture of the finished product!

    Hope this helps,

    Toni
