  • I have 4 little ones ages(61/2, 41/2, 31/2, and 19 months) and all boys! Laughing

I’ve been reading a lot about the Charlotte mason method and I am wondering how to ease my kiddos into it. Any advice or tips on scheduling? Really any advice at all would be greatly appreciated.

    Congrats on getting started!!

With kids that little, you’ll be spending lots of time doing read-alouds and nature walks/studies.

The first thing I would do is look for books on the SCM Early Years Guide and the Early Years Read-Alouds make a trip to the library! Don’t forget to include some chapter books. In our family, DH reads a chapter a night to the kids before bedtime – they’ve read Stuart Little, Winnie the Pooh, and several of the books in the Wizard of Oz series so far this year.

We like to grab seasonal books whenever we can, so over the past month or two we’ve read a lot of books about harvest time, migrating birds, hibernation, and snow.

You’ll need to add in some more things for your oldest. The Free Curriculum Guide will be a great resource for that.

Good luck, and congrats on your new venture. I’m excited for you!

You already got some great advice and places to start.

Read up on CM and habit training. Developing good habits is essential!

    Are you already homeschooling?

amandajhilburn, jawgee…Thank you for the links!

WendyB…We started “homeschooling” back when my oldest was 4. That was before I read anything about the differents methods and all that. We just started teaching our son how to write, count and stuff like that.

We taught him how to read using “100 easy lessons” by Stiegfried Englmann last year. Our 4 1/2 wanted to follow along so they both know the basics of reading, and we work on their writing a few times a week. We’ve also begun some lessons from Rightstart Math.  We have looked into Building Foundations for Scientific Understanding, but havent started any formal lessons in science. We found a set of informative animal and plant books at a thrift store and the kids love to pick something for me to read about and then we’ll usually do a craft. Our oldest likes to copy a sentence about the animal too.

Since we are not using a boxed/all put together curriculum, I’m having a hard time figuring out how to put things together.

We also enjoy lots of time outside, my boys love watching the birds at the feeders and collecting leaves and nuts. I try to follow up by reading out of our nature books and field guides.

Thank so much for the advice!

Ooooohhh, what a good idea having them pick out something to read nature/science related then following up with a craft! Thank you for sharing that!

Sounds like you are off to a great start! Planning your CM education ( from the bookstore on this site) might be really helpful for you. Very practical.

Charlotte Mason’s Volume 1: Home Education is available online at amblesideonline.com + reading everything you can from this site will help you with the philosophy of CM.

Each year will get easier especially if you pay attention to developing good habits in your children.
