  • OK – I’m a bit stumped as to where to start with my crew.  I am very drawn to the CM style of teaching – however we have not always taught this way.  We will be starting “3rd” grade (8 & 7 yr old) this year.  For K & 1st Grade we did Abeka History which didn’t really cover much of anything in depth on those levels.  We did Sonlight first semester of our current school year, 2nd grade,  so we covered Ancient History through the Vikings (obviously very surface level learning on the time periods covered)  So, although my children have been exposed to these time periods – we have done no study in detail.  2nd semester we started with Beautiful Feet Early American for Primary grades.  We are part of the way through it and I have been back and forth on wether or not to carry it on into next year and finish up (probably 1st semester) or to just stop and jump in chronological order.  They have little history exposure over all for world or American and we want to really get into more this year. I am back and forth obviously on what to do about History as far as chronologically or interest.  I get the idea of it being chronological – but what would I do at this point to work towards that? As America is slowly changing from what it’s founding fathers planned – I have a HUGE desire for my children to be taught about their own country.  If I start Ancient right now – they wouldn’t hear about our country for several years and at a much older age than I would like since we are already doing 3rd grade.  Would you please lend any advice or reasoning you have on this subject.  I’m walking in circles going back and forth!  I think the Early American we have through Beautiful Feet only goes through the Civil War anyway – but I know you guys have a current history program I could use to finish up with some American History if need be.

    Ideas:

-You could start at Module 3 and work through in order until grade twelve and end on Module 6.

-You could start at Module 5 and just keep working through the Modules until grade 12.  You would end up covering Modules 5,6,1, and 2 for high school, which would satify the American History requirement some states have.  In high school, you could consider combining Modules 1 and 2 so you could also cover 3 at the highest level.

Even if you have started some American History, I don’t think it hurts to do it again.  My kids could study Colonial and Revolutionary times forever. Laughing

I am in the same boat right now. I am just starting Module 1 with my two girls, 3rd & 2nd grade. I do want to include some American History now though, so I am doing that 2 times a week. I don’t have an American History curriculm that I’m using. Right now we’re listening the audio book of This Country of Ours, but I do plan on adding more resources down the road. We’re going to read D’Aulaires books this year, and add in some other living books. I figure that every year we can include some American History, no curriculum needed.

I’ve also been working to educate myself on American History, and this opens up so many conversations with my kiddos & hubby at the dinner table. I’m not yet sure how I will be handling the high school years entirely, but I figure I’ve got time to figure it out!!

Just for what it’s worth, I am doing 3rd grade right now, and I am using BF Books Early American History.  For next year, I plan to use BF Books Westward Expansion (it’s new, you could use it or use Module 6 instead of it), and then after that start from the beginning (Ancients) using the 6 year rotation.

    That’s me!

I am doing Module 1 with a 1st and 3rd grader. My plan for the 3rd grader is this:

    3rd- Module 1

4th-Modules 2 & 3  (emphasis on 2) We will do this by using The Children’s Bible by Catherine Vos. (since I’ll have a young 2nd grader also). It combines some of the chapters of the Bible. Also combining Geo. with another lesson, will help us to do this.

    5th- Module 4

    6th- Module 5

    7th- Module 6

8th – Modules 1 & 2 (emphasis on 2) I’m not sure what I will do about this yet Wink.

    9th- Module 3

    10th- Module 4

    11th- Module 5

    12th- Module 6
