I am going to be sticking with SCM history Modules. Cause I like the way it’s layed out. But sometimes the areas are long (like reading Kings) which I could some up in a few days.
I want to use more living books but I know nothing about history. How would I go about using other books from like Beautiful Feet or Truthquest? How do I know if they fit in the time period? Any suggestions would be great.
Hey Misty, I don’t know much about history either. But I did purchase the book All Through the Ages (History through Literature Guide) by Christine Miller. It has a lot of info and a list of reading for different time periods and different age ranges also. I haven’t used it much since I bought it but mostly because we took a break from “doing history”. BUT now my kids are begging me to do History again. So I am going to be pulling it out.
I noticed your other post about MOH. I like reading it for myself but it does seem a little dry for my young kids (oldest is 9). If you ran across a cheap copy I recommend getting it for yourself and for when you kids are older. Like I said I don’t know much about history but I have been known to sit in bed and read several chapters of MOH just for fun. Yes, I am a boring homeschool mommy.
I’m not a lot of help either, but one source I use is looking at a Sonlight catalog (it’s free online to download). It has given me some good ideas, though like anything else, it has some I do not care for as well.
You could check the CM Bookfinder. The books have a Historical Setting time period in their descriptions.
Also the Beautiful Feet catalog has the books divided by time period. And Greenleaf Press has time period divisions for their online catalog. You can download their catalog, or click on “Store” across the top and you’ll see time period divisions down the sidebar.
I recommend the living book lists at the Paula’s Archives Website as a wonderful place to start. I’ve found these lists of supplemental books for history and science to be very helpful. The history page is divided up into books for each time period, beginning at the Old Testament.
