OK, here’s a funny question… We are doing Philip and the Ethiopian tomorrow for Sunday School (3rd & 4th graders). Knowing my 2 girls who are in my class, and knowing my class in general, *someone* is going to ask what a eunuch is. How in the world do I explain that??? LOL I can do it just fine with my own children, it’s the other kids I’m more worried about. Who knows, maybe they will surprise me and not ask….
Well, I know I’ve heard the suggestion of discussin eunuch’s in regards to singing of just saying it is a person that had an operation that makes them sing higher – without any details of what the operstion is…. Maybe something similar?
I’d tell them to ask their parents. It’s not really your responsibility to tell the nitty-gritty details; you’re just telling them the account of an Ethiopian Jew (or Jewish proselyte) and Philip’s supernatural encounter.
He was a high official. Any more than that, leave it to their parents.
Additionally, if you told the class, you would probably lose the attention of the students and the big-picture point of your lesson and may have difficulty getting their minds and imaginations back in-line for learning.
I like blue j’s explanation. It doesn’t leave a mystery for the kids, doesn’t overstep your bounds into something a parent should explain, and should generally satisfy the class.
I had heard it explained by another Sunday School teacher that a eunuch was a special palace guard who was trained to protect the women’s living areas, and what made him special was that he was able to focus so totally on his job without being distracted by how beautiful the women were or by anything they were doing. The king could trust such a man to protect the queen, princesses, and their attendants.
With such an explanation, the children should be satisfied without your having to mention any “surgical procedure.”
