We are finishing or school year, yay! We leave for a ten day vacation next week and then we have about 11 school days to finish out the year. We are all pretty done (I mean over it, not finished) with our regular curriculum. I want to take those last couple weeks and do something fun. I looked up unit studies, thinking that might be the way to go, but I’m not too fond of lapbooks. Those seem to be common in unit studies.
Any ideas on how I can end our school year in a fun, Charlotte Mason way?
Btw, my kids are 6&8. And an almost 5 month old along for the ride.
Not to get into big trouble here, but is your vacation such that it can count as the end of school? I always count at least part of our vacations as school. Audio books, books to read aloud, seeing new things, new experiences? Nature? Museum?
Anyway…if you’re “done” as in over it, I’d certainly consider it. (Just finished my 20th year of hsing so maybe I’m too soft in my old age.). ?
I agree with Robin. Vacations are the perfect time to learn. Road trips are the perfect time to listen to audio books or music. You could take your field guides and nature journals and try to draw something every day.
Also, Memorial Day is Monday. Last year we were not intentional about teaching our children about Memorial Day, and it especially bothered my husband. This year we will take them to the Veterans’ Plaza to learn more about the Americans who have sacrificed to give us the freedom for so much…including the freedom to educate our children at home.
I just checked out freehomeschooldeals.com which has a whole page of links for Memorial Day learning that are mostly geared for children’s ages. I printed out some coloring pages, poems and a short story using some of those links. If you will be on the road, you could print some and put in a little folder to take along on your trip.
We finished our year with an Olympics study. I searched online for Olympics for kids websites, and found info. and crafts. Next I ordered library books and dvds. We used those and ended with a Front Yard Olympics. We had a blast.
We count museum and field trips too. We are going to the zoo all day and will count that, plus a few hours of audio books and music appreciation and car games.
I looked at a local school calendar online to see how they ended and when. The last day had early dismissal at 11:30. I am not sure what they would do besides maybe clean out their desk or locker. And there were two other days before that where they went on the bus to some local parks for end of the year class trips.
But if you want to do more, you could spend some relaxed days doing extras you may not always have time for: drawing/painting, Shakespeare, science experiments, poetry, art study, read aloud a special book.
