Which do you prefer for 10th grade and why?

I have read bits and pieces of How Should We Then Live and it is very intense. I think it’s a great book with great information but it is definitely a hard read. If I decide to have my daughter read it, I will spread it out over a long period of time to keep the readings very short so as not to be overwhelming.

I have never read 7 Men Who Rule the World From the Grave but it seems much more readable IMO. I wonder if they have it for kindle so you could read a free sample?

I think I would start with 7 Men and save How Should We Then Live for 11th and/or 12th grade if it were me.

Alternately, How Should We Then Live was also done in a video format and it is available on youtube for free. I know many people choose this over the book itself.

I just checked and 7 Men is available on kindle. I downloaded the free sample and will read it some time today.

I’m having my 11th and 10th graders read How then shall we live this year. I have read it myself. It is dense. I am not familiar with the other book but I like how this one gives the scope of western civilization. I have one who is into politics and one who wants to be an artist and I think both could benefit from seeing the trends in thought through time. I plan to have them read sections then we discuss and watch the videos.

Nebby, it’s my understanding the videos replicate the book so why do both or am I mistaken?

Thought I’d chime in here,as we have recently watched the videos. Though the videos are very dated, they are a valuable addition to the book. It is helpful to actually see the things he’s talking about. I would definitely advocate reading the chapter first. And, yes, he does basically just repeat the information from the book. Nancy Pearcey’s books would be ideal for reading after Schaeffer and before graduation.

Missceegee– having read the book (but not yet seen the videos) my thought was that it was dense did my kids and getting it in two ways would help them take it all in. I’m willing to adapt and drop one or the other if they find it redundant.

I did 7 Men.  I like both, but when I took our year as a whole and the books I was having her read for literature, it made sense for me to give her one that wasn’t quite as much to “chew”.
