When should map drills begin? I have an eight year old son who did his first map drill today. He had fun with it and already knew 45 out of our 50 states. WOW! I had no idea. The reason I am asking about age is because his spelling was pretty bad on most of the states, phonetic, but wrong none the less. I know about CM not letting kids see things spelled incorrectly, but I don’t want to dash his confidence. So, I am wondering if I should hold off on the drills, leave him be, correct his spelling each time, give him a list with the states spelled correctly, or teach him the abbreviations .
Good for him! Part of map drill is learning to spell the countries and states correctly. One idea that comes to mind: next time you might want to ask him to tell you the states orally, pointing to their locations on the map, then have him select a couple to copy correctly, keeping an eye on the spelling. That way you can encourage his knowledge and just expand on it with correct spellings.
OHH I didn’t even think about teaching them to spell during Map Drills..we just have fun finding different countries or states. Heather, great..now you have just added to my list of “things to catch up on” =) Just Kidding
