With my daughters we also read Shakespeare once or twice a week. Initially we did once a week, but now they are older (17) and real Shakespeare fans (I am from his hometown so they have been immersed in Shakespeare since they were litte) we read twice a week, and often watch the Shakespeare plays on DVD. We spent a lot of time in my mother’s home in Stratford on Avon and have been fortunate to visit the theatre to watch the plays and visit all the famous sites, including the Globe in London. For younger ones, and kids who cannot get into Shakespeare – I would only do once a week. When they were little and still in PS we used to read the Lamb and Nesbit books to them and they remembered the stories once they started reading the real plays. We are reading King Lear right now. The narrations that the girls do, are usually written now, though they can give really good oral narrations as well. Good luck with it.
