For a almost 6 year old almost 1st grader. She has finished the PreK and K HWOT workbooks and likes to write letters to grandma, lists for mom, etc. She just needs practice with taking the time to form each letter nicely and in the lines. Also with lower case letters since she defaults to upper case though she can write both.
So would you do once a day? Once a week? A couple times a week? Or pick passage for the week and do 5-10 min each day until it is completed so she could be working on it for 2 days or 5 days?
Daily for about 5 minutes or so. I still do the same with my DD7. She went through HWT 1st grade book and then on to copywork. It is not often that I do not require her to do some handwriting every day.
Daily for my son who is 9 and my daughter who is 11 keeps a journal of her own quotes, passages, verses. Neatness and perfection of execution (no errors) is what I strive for with my son … who writes like a doctor btw.
So at what age do you stop it daily? Cause I have boys and the only time they have neat writing is for copywork. Do I just continue? We do 1 sentence a day.
At some point, when kids are around 10 or 11, you can change to a “Book of Mottos” – where they are picking sayings that means something to them from their writings, or other places they hear quotes.
Remember that copywork is for more than handwritting – it is also for them to internalize good grammar, good spelling, character traits, and in general good writing style.
