My oldest daughter is 7 and is in 2nd grade.  Can anyone tell me how much writing she is suppossed to be doing and also what kind of writing?  She does copywork regularly but it is usually just one or two sentences.  Should she be doing more?  We have English for the thoughtful child but so far are going through it very slowly.  She is not confident in her writing.  She is a perfectionist and because she doesn’t think she can do it perfectly the first time she doesn’t want to try.  Or she takes a VERY, LONG, TIME!  I think that if she were to practice more then she would get better at it and hopefully it wouldn’t be such a burden for her. But I don’t want to overwhelm her and have the opposite happen instead.  I really want her to enjoy this and reach her potential.  Does anyone know exactly how much writing a 2nd grade student should be able to do?

I am also wondering how much writing a second grader should be doing. My son does copy / transcribing and writes some of his answers when we work on a lap book. His hand seems to tire quickly. How much writing do your second graders do Ladies? I know it varies from child to child, I was just looking for personal experiences. Thanks.

My DD did EFTTC, book 1 last year in 2nd grade.  I had her write just about everything on a separate paper.  She did not like it!  This year we are doing book 2.  We are doing as much orally as possible, and she is much happier!  The amount of writing is going to vary for each child, but if she hates it I would keep it to a minimum.  The copywork should be fine.  For fun you might have her write a letter to a friend or start up a pen pal relationship.  She also does writing for her map drill, but occasionally she will cut and paste the country names onto the blank map, however, most of the time she will choose to write in the name.  She also goes on a whim to write a story, and that can be a great opportunity to work on handwriting, but I don’t stay on top of beauty of her penmanship b/c that is not the focus.

You might find these links helpful when judging how much she should be writing during copywork and eventually written narrations/essays.

I’ve used IEW with my older children.  It breaks things down into very small steps.  But, Lindafay’s CM suggestions are certainly just as effective and MUCH cheaper.  Wink

My Dd 7 does 2 lines of copywork each day. Improvements are small and gradual. She has a desire to write more but is still building up the skills. Sometimes she also draws with Draw Write Now, which I think helps build finger muscles and attention to help with writing skills. I sent a pm too.
