How much daily time do you spend in both in instruction and practice when teaching a 5 year old to read?

    That depends on the 5yo!

My 4yo did ok with 15-20 minutes (but really wanted to learn how to read) – but with some kids 5 minutes could be too much…

For both of my boys (who are now 7 and 11) 5-10 minutes once or twice a day was enough (and more than enough in some cases!)

I’m on the short end too! I’ve taught 3 to read and 1 taught himself so far. Between phonics practice and reading time combined we start with 5 minutes. We move to 10-15 minutes when they show they’re ready (asking to keep reading from their readers) but I try to stop before they are ready so it’s something they still want to do.

Even now I only require my just aquiring fluency readers to read to themselves for 15 minutes a day.

I’ve generally done about 10 minutes (give or take).  I try to pay attention to how they are doing and stop before they get frustrated…One of my readers struggled through the lessons, but the other really enjoyed them.  My current new reader seems to be in the middle.

My 7yo is considered a beginner reader and 10 minutes is about his max for practice/lesson time.  He likes his readers and goes on and off w/ wanting to stop and wanting to go on.  I try to stop before frustration sets in.  He enjoys word games throughout the days so I just go w/ that for now.
