How much copywork should a 1st grader be doing and how long should the quote/poem/scripture be? Also, do they do a different one each week or do you have them do the same one for say a few days or a week, etc?

Hi April – we just got the SCM copywork books for my first grader and he loves them. He does a page every day, which is usually only 3-4 big lines (about 6 words total). The nice thing is that it is usually a good literary selection, so he actually enjoys reading and writing it and doing his best. And like most SCM products, they are very affordable.
I have seen really good results with slowing my boys down on their copywork and really asking that they pay attention and do their best. I think the recommendation of Sonja is that you set a timer and start with 5 minutes of perfect execution (their very best try). Then you can increase the length of the assignments and time as you see that they are able to concentrate and do their very best.

My 7YO son struggles with his handwriting. We use Presidential Penmanship and he does one short passage each week. He works on it most every day, but he spends probably 5 minutes each day doing his very best. On Fridays, he finishes the passage he has been working on and then writes his name (first, middle, and last) as extra practice.
I think it really depends on the skill of your child, though. My older son could write his letters much earlier than my younger son, so I am sure he could have done more.

I think it’s going to vary a lot by child, and how much they can do well with concentrated effort and good quality without frustration. My dd7 generally did 1 longer or 2 shorter sentences per day during her “first grade” year….but she was also ready and able to that. When we first started copywork toward the end of her K year, she did maybe 2-3 words per day, taking several days to complete just one sentence. So, I’d watch your child and see how much they can do well without frustration, and then slowly build up from there.
