I have a 4 YO boy and an almost 7 YO girl.  I’m trying to figure out if there’s a balance I should strike between teaching them to be attentive, and allowing them to fiddle/play/etc during read-alouds.  We use CM for afterschooling (DD goes to a Christian half-day school) so we’re only talking about 15-20 minutes of read-alouds a day max.  For DS I don’t have him participate in “school” read-alouds at all unless he wants to, but I’m trying to decide if I should require him to sit quietly for 10 minutes during family devotions or if it’s ok for him to drive a car around on the floor or something during them.

I allow fiddling during school time read alouds. Dd, 10, likes to knit. Others doodle or play with Legos. But we do not allow it during family worship. sitting still then is great practice for sitting through church.

We are similar to nebby. During read alouds the children are encouraged to have something quiet in their hands. During scripture study they are encouraged to have scriptures in their hands and stay involved.
