How many supplement LA for 3rd grade, or do you just trust the process?

We are new to the style of learning and will be implementing much of it for my 3rd grade son this fall.  I am having a hard time with the LA component of scm.  Do you add in light grammar or do you just trust the process as recommended?

I trust the process.  For me, that means pointing out the parts of speech and punctuation through daily copywork and narrations.  If you have the components you need (rich literature, copywork, narrations), you won’t need to supplement, especially for a 3rd grade student.

With that said, if you want to add in some light grammar, feel free.  I have used English For the Thoughtful Child, both volumes, Emma Serls Primary Language Lessons, MadLibs, Word Roots and the Pathway Readers Language Arts workbooks (we won’t finish the one we have).

I’ve used these products just because we can, and they’re quite sweet. But we have not used them consistently.  Most of the time it’s been to give my dc something independent to use or when I’m having a bad day with my health issues.  I may pick up something for my 12yo to give him something because of my health but I’m not quite sure.

I pretty much trust the process.  I will introduce the ‘grammar terms’ like noun, verb, etc some simply because they see it on their yearly standardized testing we take (have to have a score to submit to the state each year if we’re not doing a portfolio review).  But beyond that I’m pretty much leaving it alone.  We have fun books the kids like looking at by Ruth Heller for grammar when I introduce them to one of these terms. They are beautiful pictures and simple reads.  Ex: Merry Go Round: A Book About Nouns and Many Luscious Lollipops: A Book About Adjectives.

Thanks ladies….it helps so much to hear from you more experienced scm’ers!
