This is great! I visited the Outdoor Hour Challenge website recently and she mentions posting nature pics on your own blog and linking them to hers but of course I don’t have a blog. I’ve been considering starting one mainly as a creative outlet and who knows maybe someone will find encouragement along the way. Good advice ladies….and Doug. Thanks. Oh I do have a question though. I was reading on an information site about needing a host site plus Word Press or another blog template, is this accurate?
I started blogging with WordPress almost 5 years ago and I’ve been very happy wtih it. They have lots of free templates to choose from and it’s easy to use.

I post about anything on my mind, the topics usually being homeschooling, homesteading, healthy cooking, and just our day to day activities. I do post our first names, but I’m careful not to give out our last names or disclose where we live. (Like another poster said above, though, there is so much information tracked abaout each of us all over the web, that I’m sure it would be quite easy to track us down if someone really wanted to.)
I usually spend a couple of hours on the weekend writing several posts that I’ll post throughout the week.
I don’t have a very large “readership”, but I have made some wonderful friends through my blog. I find that I have many more people reading my blog if I choose the option to have my blog automatically send a link to my Facebook page. Then people don’t have to do any work to actually check my page. They can just click over quickly.
My reasons for writing are to keep my long-distance family in the loop about our lives, to share the pictures that I so love to take, to keep a journal for my family to read later (I plan to have it printed like Tristan), and just because I love to write! 🙂
When you start your blog, be sure to leave a link for all of us to come over for a visit!

Yes, you need have a place for your blog to live. An easy way to get started is with a free account from wordpress.com or blogger.com (I prefer WordPress). The other option is to pay for a hosting account with WordPress on it. That is more flexible but more technical to maintain yourself.
OK this is CRAZY! I dreamed all night last night that I was trying to start a blog but was so computer dense that I couldn’t figure it out. LOL!! I kept telling myself in my dream to drop it, that I had way too many things on my plate to do this but I kept trying. Never did get one up. Then I read this first thing…
LOL Robin!! If I can do it, so can you! I started blogging about 4 years ago. I actually began blogging before I began homeschooling. My blog is more sewing, cooking, crafting, photos, etc than homeschool. I have kind of been a slacker for the last 6 months or so, but feel free to stop by.
I do use our first names, but not our last. I have an etsy shop associated with my blog so it is tricky to keep everything a secret. People can find out who you are lots of other ways. I actually worry more about Facebook and such than my blog.
I have a blog that I just started not too long ago to document more of our homeschooling journey for our family and personal memories. I am going for 3 posts a week and they are anything from homemaking to homeschooling to recipes.
I don’t use my kids names and gave them nicknames. You would be able to start a blog no problem. I liked blogger.com to start but now have a hosted blog on wordpress. A VERY informative blog about how to start a blog is bloggingwithamy.com. This is beyond what you would probably need but it is nice to have a step by step guide if you do find yourself wanting to do more with it.
Thank you all for so much information. I read portions of http://www.bloggingwithamy.com and evidently I have a HUGE learning curve! What an informative website! I am still mulling it over…not sure if I need something else to help me spend more time on the computer :-). Also, I’ve learned I need a “niche” and I’m not sure what it would be. I am passionate about nutrition and love to share what I know, but now adding gluten free into the mix as well…although I have alot to learn with this. Also, I know we have a very small budget compared to most people I’ve spoken to and we still manage to eat nutrient dense whole foods, raw milk, grass fed beef, everything from scratch without a garden. People who know how we eat don’t believe that it can be done on our measley little budget…which is why they’ve been asking me to blog about how to make it happen.
I will check out pennywise women as well. I used to follow it, but changed computers and didn’t switch over all of my favorites so I’d forgotten about it!
Thanks again ladies! I am inspired and impressed by you all…and now I know it can be done. I just need to explore the ways I can fit it into my schedule and that particular “niche” I’m looking for.
If you need a boost: I would read any blog that would help me continue eating organically and lower my grocery budget. lol We spend a small fortune on groceries and we don’t eat EVERYTHING organic. But we try. 🙂 I have seen people doing the couponing thing that is all the rage right now…but from what I can tell, a lot of what is bought around here for next to nothing is akin to plastic. Real food? Less money? Show me how!! lol
p.s. I do have a blog…I started one about 6 months ago or so? I write because it gives me an outlet…and a jumping off point for some writing projects the Lord is laying on my heart. But I doubt I have a niche any different from a million other bloggers. Pray about it and if you feel called to blog about your gift of real-food-on-a-budget, forget the niche and get to writing! 🙂
I think you’ll enjoy it – it’s an awful lot of fun, and I know I’ve learned so much about homeschooling, adoption and gluten free living from what others have generously shared through the years; this is part of my motivation for blogging.
We also keep our location and names private, and so the kids have silly nicknames that exemplify a hobby or trait.
