How many books per term/year do you read to your younger children?

I know that Charlotte recommended that we not read a huge number of books to younger children…..so how do you apply this to your hs?

Do you have a list for each year?

Would love to know what others do with this.

    Perhaps this will help.

Scheduling Books and Pages – from a CM mom, compiled from CM writings, I believe.

that link overwhelmed me!!!  so the 25 books / term for 4th graders – is that including books we read aloud in school and as a family or is that just extra reading for him?  And my son reads these chapter books and I don’t see how 12-20 pages a day would get him through that many books in 12 weeks.  Am I misunderstanding this chart?

    Thanks,

I, too, can see how overwhelming that chart might be. My first thought is whether I’m understanding it correctly. Are the number of books per year/term/week/day including all subjects (except math, I would guess) or does that exclude things like character development or Bible?

Remember many books stretched over a year or years being read 1 ch per week.

In our family, we schedule 1 ch (or chunk of pages) per day for Literature and 1 ch for History typically. So in a 12 wk term we read 33 ch of each. If the book’s chapters are very short, we read 2-3. I use the last week for exams and catchup. I use this same principle for 1-3 when I’m reading or for older kids who read on their own. Sometimes, we have more than one lit or history book at a time to equal more chapters read per term, but this is my baseline.

I like that chart, but remember its a tool. I don’t break chapters unless very long and many books we read daily instead of book 1 on Monday, book 2 on Wednesday, book 3 on Thursday, etc. I prefer reading book 1 daily followed by book 2, etc. I do usually have at least one book that we read 1 time per week, but not all of our books.

Does that help or muddy things? Btw, the SCM Books and Things Seminar addresses this more clearly, but I can’t pull that out at the moment.

yes that helps!! Thanks for clarifying.  That is basically what we do as well.  It just seemed like a lot when I saw it broken down like that.  I need to listen to the books and things seminar.  My 9yo has really taken off with reading this year.  He loves it BUT he has occular albinism w/ nystagmus so reading for any length of time exhaust his eyes.  So while I want to challenge him I have to set realistic expectations for him.  But audiobooks work great too and are a tool I need to make better use of.  Thanks again!
