I’m planning for next year when we start (finally) using the CM style of teaching. I will have approx a 1st and 2nd grader. Do I read just one living book and use the reading and narration on a given day to cover the “literature”, “history” and the “composition” subjects recommended on the free curriculum here?

Or do I read one or two books at a time to cover those subjects? We will be using TruthQuest for history, so I think that will be separate for us. Then would I think I would choose just one other book to hit the “literature” and “compositon” subjects. I don’t know how well the kids will want to sit and listen to more than that.

We have several read alouds going at once and my kids range in age from 1 to 11. Right now, for example, we’ve got:

    – A history story

    – A family read aloud for fun

    – A book to listen to in audio format at quiet time and bedtime

    – A science/nature study story.

I say do what works for your kids!

We have several right now as well:

–2 geography books (biography of David Livingstone and Letters From Egypt)

–history book (Pharoahs of Ancient Egypt)

    –literature book (Pinocchio)

–character study (Missionary Stories with the Millers)

–We’re also reading Grammar Land  (for grammar)

–my older two each have their own chapter book they are working on

We do a quick review of the previous chapter before we beging and that helps them remember which book we are reading and where we are in the book.  We read the books at different paces…some we read a chapter a week and others we read a chapter (or more) each day.  My DC are ages 10-3.  To keep their interest, you can spread the books throughout the day…We read in the morning, at lunchtime, in the afternoon, and in the evening.  It’s also nice to alternate readings with other subjects (piano lessons, math, PE, art, etc.).  I also keep an eye on them…if I notice they are no longer listening as well, we move on to something else.

My girls are 8 and 3. We are currently reading Sojourn in Africa (Geography), Ancient Egypt and Her Neighbors (History), The Child’s Story Bible, listening to The House at Pooh Corner audiobook, and the Wind in the Willows audiobook. Sometimes we have a nature study book such as Bear Brownie The Life of a A Bear. Currently for science/nature study we are reading Apologia’s Exploring Creation through Astronomy.

We spread reading out throughout the day and its nice to have audiobooks for the car or bedtime.

Thank you, that’s very helpful. I was afraid they would feel like they are drowning in books; but if we spread them out as you suggest, they’ll enjoy it more. I’m so programmed by our traditional method now, I look forward to the freedom of CM!

I have been using ideas from the CM method for over 10 years, but this is the first year I’ve completly switched over to the CM method and I love it! It is really enjoyable and simple. We keep a read-aloud going at all times. We read that in the morning. I use the sonlight catalog-we are currently reading A Little Princess. The kids take turns narrating. Also in the morning I read a picture book for science/nature study. I get them from the library and we read these about 2 times a week. For history, sometimes I read a picture book (also sonlight), and sometimes I read from The Mystery of History. History is done aobut 3 times a week. The kid’s give oral narration for the history and science books. My 12 yr old does a written narration for MOH. Some evenings we listen to dramatized versons of lamplighter books. (no narration) My childen always have assigned reading. My son is reading Trumpet of the Swan by EB White, and my daugher is reading one of the pathway Readers. I was having my son narrate everyday from his silent reading, but not so much lately.
