Dd will be third grade next year and is about done with the Grade 3 Pathway Readers. No problems there. She has also been reading easier chapter books that we have around the house and generally understands what she reads.

For next year I have the following books lined up so far.  All to be read independently with oral narrations.

    History books –

    A Triumph for Flavius

    Beast of Lor

    Pompeii: Buried Alive

    Science books –

    George Washington Carver bio

    Literature books –

    Owls in the Family

    The Moffats

    Homer Price

Does that seem like a reasonable amount for a clearly capable reader?  Do you prefer more variety in the Literature genres or do you not mind them all being light hearted or goofy books?

    That seems reasonable to me.

I think it is alright. I have one in third grade this year and just about two months ago I started having all the kids reading from a harder lit book one day a week. My 5th grader is reading Heidi, and my 4th grade ds and 3rd grade dd are both reading Just Sostories. As they get older and better, I will obviously pick harder selections. But I think your choices are fine for just startingout. We have some easier versions of Black Beauty and The Secret Garden that they have read but I know some people are very careful about which version or edition they pick.
