How many books do you try to schedule for when setting up your year? I mean…. So many biographies? So many literature bks? So many science books? Etc….
I have to say it depends upon the age of the child, their ability level, the subject, and the books in question. Some years we use more than others. I guess I don’t worry about the number of books so much as I am concerned about giving my kiddos a well rounded picture of the subject in question. However, older students tend to get more books than my younger one, but not always as some of the older ones have books that are very meaty so need to be read more slowly.
We don’t really schedule our books. We always just “do the next thing”. But to give you an idea of how many books per year my kids read (a 10yo and a 7yo)
The 7yo struggles with reading, so she reads books to me 2 or 3 times a week for 10 minutes at a time. She’s read 20 books to me so far this year. (Books like Ricka, Flicka and Dicka and Harry the Dirty Dog series)
For history, we’ve read 7 books so far this year (we used many movie and audio resources this year due to me being sick and on bed rest, that number is usually a bit higher)
For what I refer to as assigned reading – Books that are just good literature, that I’d like them to read for “fun” – no narration or things required – I read 4 books to my 7yo (things like All of a kind family books) and my 10 year old read 8 so far this year (Things like Captains Courageous and Lord of the Rings Series)
For literature, we’ve read 4 books as a family. (Usually higher, but we cut this out of our schooling when I was on bed rest)
My son has read 4 books for science and my daughter has been read 2 books (again, usually higher)
