How long is your school day?

I have another question.  Hope I’m not pestering:)  I’ve been a bit concerned that our school days seem long—but part of it is we are late risers.  Can you tell me how long your children do school and what that includes?  And if you have time to scan our schedule, would love to know if you think our day is reasonable (my 4th grader thinks it’s too long:)

My 4th grader does about 4 hours, and that includes free reading, piano practice and a workout.  Some days might be 15-30 min. more.  This is about  1 hr. of all independent written work and a devotional, 30 min. of free reading, 10-20 min. of history w/me, 15 min. history or lit. reading on own, 30 min. workout, plus about one hour plus of together studies (below).

My 1st grader does about 3 hours, that includes free reading, piano practice and a workout.   This is about 30 min. of all written work, 25 min. of me reading to him, 10 min of him reading to me/working on speech issues, 20 min. free reading and devotional, 10 min. piano, 30 min. workout, plus the hour or so of together time. He likes the science and is allowed to draw, do puzzles, etc. during the together time (except Bible). We don’t do the workout tapes (for kids) every day, and workouts includes sledding, and playing outside in nice weather.

Our together time is generally 20 min. of Bible/Scripture Memory, 25 min. science or history, 10 min. language, sometimes 10-15 min. lit. Composers, poetry, nature studies are added in short sports.

Sorry so long.  I just get concerned because I try to combine CM with some added writing/language arts—but don’t want to overdo it. I should maybe add that my kids are old for their grade—turned 10 and 7 in July.  Thanks for any input:)  I always appreciate you ladies!   Gina

Gina, I just wanted to let you know that it sounds fine.  My kids have about 1.5hrs of independent study and we have about 1.5 hr together study, then there’s the other things that I don’t put into that like music that we listen to, outtings that we go to, or outside natrue time.

I think your time is good.  Also, my boys know that if they get there stuff done fast (but good) they are free to go outside in the morning and they love that!  Misty

It sounds fine to me, too. Actually, in Ga., we’re required to have 4 1/2 hrs. of instruction. Which is easy when you add in all of the extras like nature study, education dvds, audio stories, art study, music, their personal projects that they engage in on their own, gardening, etc…in addition to the “school time”. Mine are 8 and 9 and the 9 yr. old has one more subject than the 8 yr old; that being Primary Lang. Lessons. I just keep the lessons short, the longest is the Hebrew lesson, which takes about 30 min.; there’s just a lot of variety.

Thanks, Misty and Rachel.  Sometimes it’s just hard to be mom and teacher—I want more time to play with the kids, but am so tired by the time school is done, messes are cleaned, need to start dinner, etc.  If we started earlier, it probably wouldn’t feel like such a long day.

Thanks for the confirmation.  We had lunch with friends yesterday and discussed this—-I’m waiting for my 4th grader to remind me that her friend does less time:)  Will have to show her this post!  Thanks, and hope you have a blessed day!   Gina

I count all sorts of things as “school”; the children don’t even realize it sometimes! We were looking at our seeds sprouting for the garden and my son said “is this School?” I said “yes, life is school; you learn all day”.

Perhaps some change in venue for the school work (like outside on a nice day) would help her feel less cranky. Also, maybe something hands-on or a different appproah to the same subject. I do that with mine to shake up the “normal” day and give us something different that’s refreshing.

    Hi Rachel,

Thanks for the suggestions!  I’m kind of boring and uncreative when it comes to shaking things up.  We do try to go to the park, etc. for school sometimes when it’s nice.  Thanks for the reminder to try to avoid ruts:)  Gina

Gina, can you tell me how you go about your bible memory for 20 minutes?  We were doing the Scripture memory system but it was only taking 5 minutes at the most.

Nevermind about my questions above, I’m just realizing that that the 20 minutes is both bible *and* scripture memory – not just scripture memory.  Embarassed

    Rene,

Yes, that includes Bible time:)  Gina
