How long each day?

This is my second year homeschooling and it has been fun but trying to say the least. I have been researching the CM method and really think it may be something that my daughter would enjoy and then our days may be a little easier to get through. My questions is…what do you do each day and how long is a day? My daughter is in the fifth grade…will be sixth when we start CM. I see on the website that lessons should be only 20 mintues long but how many lessons do you do in a day? I know you can’t fit everything in on one day so what do you do daily and then how often do you do everything else. I guess I am just looking to find out what other moms are doing each day….like your daily schedule and how long a school day usually lasts. Thanks!

    Be blessed,

My 5 year old kindy spends about 1 1/2 hours total on “school”.  This includes family studies and read alouds.

My 9 year old 4th grader spends about 2 1/2 hours total and that includes all of the above too.

My 13 year old 8th grader spends 4 to 4 1/2 hours on school/day including family studies.

For a sixth grader, the subjects should be at least 30+ min. HIgh Schooler, 45 min.+

So, what classes do you teach everyday and then how often do you teach the other classes? I guess I am just kinda wanting to know specifics because I am nervous to start something new even though I do think it will be better. Thanks!

No, problem. I have a bad cold, that’s why I was so short (my head’s going to explode while blowing my brains out); so I’ll chime in tomorrow.

My dds are only 8, 6, and 3 1/2 yrs, but I’ll lay out our daily schedule…
Every day we read the bible (we are following SCM Joshua-Malachi & Ancient Greece), scripture memory, hymn, math, Spanish, reading,  writing/copywork/grammar, and literature.
On Mon and Tues science   Monday Art study Tuesday Poetry Wed. Geography and drawing  Friday Ancient history
Handicrafts and music study sprinkled in–usually read about a composer once then just listen to music weekly (sometimes during lunch)
Our lessons are 20 mins and under, sometimes longer for bible if we have good discussion. We work from 10a-12p.

Based on these examples, I’m wondering if we are doing too much or not enough…or maybe I’m not as organized as I think.  I should probably post my ‘schedule’ on another thread and see what some of you think.

No help here, I know, but these ladies are full of help and great ideas!

    Yeah! I can breathe again!

Okay, I have an almost 10 yr. old and a 10.5 yr. old. Roughly grades 3ish and 4ish. I try to keep my artists and composers during the same time period as the history we’re studying, including the scientists bios of the time period if possible. Nature study happens everyday at our house, with bird watching, chicken keeping, and gardening.
It’s probably easier for me than most, as mine are so close to each other. I alter the required lit. readings and levels of foreign language, math and LA that I expect to be finished.

    Family

    • Daily: Bible, Literature, leisure reading (in the evening), BOC (as needed)
    • Mon and Tues.: History days with read aloud history lit., folk tales/legends of time period, sometimes a documentary.
    • Wed. and Thurs.: Science days with AIG on Wed. and read aloud (A Story Book of Science) on Thurs. Sometimes a science DVD/video
    • Thurs.-Composer study read aloud
    • Fri.-Art study read aloud, Shakespeare and character development in the form of Lamplighter reading

    Both at their own levels:

    • Mon-Thurs.- copywork (still manuscript), cursive practice (learning letters); Hebrew; Spelling Wisdom (we try to do 2 dictations a week), literature, leisure readings, math, LA (ILL for 4th, PLL for 3rd), audio stories, my 10.5 yr. old son also has Seq. Sp. to help improve his spelling.
    • Mon and Tues– independent history readings; Elson
    • Wed. and Thurs.-independent science readings; independant musician reading; poetry read aloud
    • Fri.-Isreali/Jewish studies; computer Hebrew games; Hebrew vocabulary tests; math specialty (measurement for 4th, clocks for 3rd), math drill, independent artist reading, independent personal development reading or study

I think that covers it. I alternate heavy and lighter days. If I”m not feeling well or if my husband has had a really bad day (his seizures will interfere with our day), then I will adjust what I want completed. Also, I have to consider days that we go to the doctor with him (I have to drive, so we all go together); on those days, mainly the independent stuff only gets finished. As you can see, CM is flexible for different home situations.

Time wise, including our family subjects, my dd has a 3 hour day and my son (who has more Hebrew and whose pace is slower) pushes to 4-4.5 hours. I use the CM Organizer, which makes my life so much more organized in the area of scheduling. Adore the CM Organizer!

Thanks so much to everyone helping me out. I opened the CM organized yesterday and added some of my dd’s books. I really think the CM organizer is going to make staying organized super easy!
