Thinking of doing these with my 6 yo who will be in 1st grade next year. I realize the amount of time that they take can be flexible, but for those who’ve done them, about how long did they take each day?
The book isn’t really set up for completing a lesson each day. You should advance through the lessons according to your child’s understanding of the concepts. Because a Charlotte Mason education uses short lessons, a 1st grade student’s math lesson should be no longer than 15-20 minutes, shorter to begin with if your student cannot give full attention for 15 minutes. The best way to keep the lessons appropriately short for your student is to set a timer. When the timer goes off mark your place in the book and put it away.
Yes, on average, a child should be able to finish a book in one year. However, there is plenty of room to spread the books out over the elementary school years as there will be five (not six) books covering addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, fractions, decimals, percents, factors, and weights and measures.
Would a child be able to transition to a different math program without too much difficulty after completing only part of the series? My older children use Teaching Textbooks and I would likely want to switch this child to TT in 3rd or 4th grade. If he completes one book a year he finish either the first 2 or first 3 books in the CM Math series before switching to TT.
Transitioning to a different math curriculum should not be a problem. One difficulty with moving from one math curriculum to another is placement in the curriculum you are changing to, so be sure to utilize a placement test or talk to a representative before deciding on which level to use.
