I found What I Eat: Around the World in 80 Diets at our library. I’m putting a hold on it and will compare it to Hungry Planet (which I already have). So if you want to wait a week or so, I’ll be happy to post a detailed review/comparison.
Okay, Bookworm, you and you alone are responsible for a new addiction at our house. This book is fascinating! So hard to put down! It just went on my Amazon wish list.
This one chronicles 80 people from 30 different countries and shows a typical day’s food for that one person. Rather than being arranged by country, it is arranged by calorie amount. The (as always) interesting write-up about the person gives you an idea of his or her activity level. It itemizes what each person ate at each meal/snack during the day, then gives the total calorie intake, along with the person’s age, height, and weight. It doesn’t sermonize about the person’s choices, just gives you the person’s story in a living format and lets you come to your own conclusions.
As to how it compares with Hungry Planet, I can only say that it is just as good, just as interesting, just as addictive to read. My computer was being repaired all day today so I got to spend as much time with What I Eat as I wanted to, and I just kept turning the pages! I think I’ll add it to the curriculum guide along with the other two leisure reading geography books by the same authors (who included their typical daily meals in the back of the book).
