OK, a weird question, I know..and probably one of those things that is actually very simple that I’m making more difficult than it needs to be (I’m good at that!).  DD 5.5 has taken an interest in clocks and so I have been teaching her how to tell time.  She’s got the hour and half-hour down pretty well, so next comes the minute hand.  But…I think that I will have to teach her how to skip-count by 5s before I can teach her how to read the minute hand.   She can read and understand numbers up through 60 and has a good grasp on place value (10s and 1s anyhow).  We are using a hodge-podge of math resources (mainly MEP Reception level – we are almost done but the focus is more on mathematical thinking than concrete number skills – we also keep a calendar and do a ‘number of the day’ thing)…so no teacher’s guide with it all laid out.   Would it be OK to just use a hundred chart and learn it by rote?  Or what?   Any ideas on skip counting in general, or reading the minute hand on a clock in particular would be appreciated.

    Thanks,
    Jen

I found these at Homeschool Share:

    http://files.homeschoolshare.com/docs54478/file%20folder%20games/file%20folder%20Skip%20Counting%20Game.pdf.

My ds also likes the Schoolhouse Rock video:

Jolanthe at Homeschool Creations also has these:

I can’t remember what else I used. You could play hopscotch but make the boxes with only the 5s and 10s, I suppose, or lay number cards on the floor or sidewalk and have her jump from 5 to 10 to 15 and so on.

    Mathstart book: Leaping Lizards

Teach and count out nickels as 5 cents.

Have her count everyone’s fingers and toes by 5’s.

We do the Math U See skip count songs for those who like music (they do the rote reciting after the song each time on the CD).  We also do plain old rote counting, maybe with a bit of a rhythm.  Repetition, repetition!  Having the number chart in front of them can help.   We also cover the numbers we’ll say in a skip count on the hundreds chart with tiles and they say the number and uncover it.  Next time through they say the numbers and cover them.

Thanks for the ideas all – that gives me quite a few ideas to play around with.

Thank you for this post! We do Math U See as well and skip counting has totally tripped us up… my DS (5.5) just cannot seem to skip count consistently enough to do the math associated with it. He doesn’t like the School House Rock video and so I too am looking for any other fun ways to help him get ahold of this.

I make up songs.  It’s fun. We do 4’s to the Adams family melody, 6’s are to She’ll Be Coming Around the Mountain.  Our 3’s are to the same tune as the Months of the year song we sing, but I don’t know the name of that particular melody.  I don’t have songs for 7, 8, or 9 yet.  My creative juices ran out last year.  lol
