Can any share how they keep record of read alouds? I haven’t figured out a time efficient way of keeping a book log. My DD is 5 and 2.5 yrs and we use books from the library for read-alouds. I want to keep a history of what we read but the systems I have come up with are very time consuming. Needing a little help here…… TIA Wink

I just write the titles and dates we finished them on a log that I keep in our records binder. I have entertained the idea of just using my phone or camera to snap a picture of each cover, but that’s as far as got on that idea-maybe I could print a collage type thing at CVS? If you’re using library books-do you access your library online? Could you just print the screen with all the books you have checked out? I’ll be interested to see how others keep track..

    Just an Excel spreadsheet.

I like the snapshot idea! We are doing a photolog of our school year – we print a snapfish album at the end of the year with pictures from each month and special pages for each child. I had never thought of logging our read alouds this way, though. You can enter text in these books, as well, so there is no reason that they couldn’t just be listed.

Is there a reason (state mandate?) for you to log the read aloud hours/pages? Would it be enough just to make a list as they are completed? That is what we have always done, but we fortunately have no record keeping requirement in our state.

I use an excel spreadsheet – that way I can printout what I need to for the yearly portfolio.

I keep mine in the SCM organizer – but I also have a goodreads account and I have a shelf there called readalouds – I enter the books there 🙂

Thank you all for your input. I record everything just in case my state (Louisiana) decides to start giving homeschoolers a hard time. My state is pretty lenient, but in the event of having to go back in time to prove I have been teaching my child, logging our read alouds is important to me since it is a large part of our school day. I may try the spreadsheet idea to log the ones completeted.

My library does have online account management so I thought about printing my history, but we check out soooooo many other books just for fun that I would have a huge paper stack at the end of the year instead of a neat list of the twaddle free books that counted towards school.

    Thank you everyone.

I write some major ones on a sheet of paper and keep the list with my copy of the grades and the calendar of school days I am required to submit.. It is very simple.

I want to “practice” keeping records for my dd this year as she is in 7th grade so that I can get into more of a habit before she is in high school.  She already writes down the books that she reads on her own/free time as well as other books I give her to read.  I have a separate list in my binder on which I just write down the titles of the books we do for read-alouds as a family.

Should I combine these lists (just a typed list) and title it as her “book list”?  Would I include things like the apologia book we do as a family?  A little unclear as to what would be most helpful, especially as I’m thinking of habits to get into prior to high school.  (and just to be clear, it’s mostly for transcript practice for college, not necessarily for state requirements)
