When we educated with more of a traditional/classical slant with some textbooks we used spiral notebooks for each subject. They used these notebooks to write down any answers to problems, etc.
This will be our first full year of CM style schooling. We have completed Story of the World in the past, we did the coloring sheets, oral narration and mapwork. I would typically trash it all at the end of the month. I just didn’t want to keep up with all of the loose paper.
Instead of individual spiral notebooks, other than for their math, I am considering more of a binder system.
What have become your favorites for student organization? What does it look like in your home when assigning their readings/narrations?
I print out copywork pages and math worksheets from RightStart for my DS6. I keep those pages and all his other random drawings and non-school related work in a big drawer near our kitchen table. Then once a year I punch them all with a 3-hole punch and put them in a big binder with subject dividers for each subject. He puts his name and date on all these papers so it is pretty easy to put it in chronologically. He loved seeing his kindergarten notebook all put together. It was enjoyable for him to be able to see his progress from the beginning of the year to the end (especially with copywork). It only took a few hours to put it together and since I just do it once a year it isn’t too much of a strain on my time.
He also keeps a history notebook where we paste coloring pages and pages where he dictates a narration and I write it for him. We use Beautiful Feet Early Primary American History and he loves coloring the pages from their free picture packet here…
We keep a family Nature Study notebook at this point (my other 2 are very young). We draw a picture related to our nature study that week and narrate about our outing. You can see an example of this on my blog:
For the history and nature study notebooks, I love the spiral bound notebooks from Millers Pad and Paper. They have a blank area at the top and lined paper at the bottom.
We keep it pretty simple. I print out weekly assignment sheets for each child and place in their main binder with that week’s Spelling Wisdom passage or copywork passage behind it. Any and all papers they make go into this binder EXCEPT items they do for history, those go in their history binder. (We’re doing History Revealed, so more hands on and project based than a traditional CM method).
My daughter picks out a special notebook each year for all of her copy work and dictation exercises. She has a nature notebook and a book of centuries and both of these carry over through the years. She types her written narrations on the computer and immediately prints them out and places them in her portfolio-we keep one portfolio for each year as required by our state law. All loose papers are placed in the portfolio as soon as they are completed. My daughter has mostly map work, written narrations and science assignments in her portfolio as we have workbooks for grammar and math.
