Next year I’ll have 1st, 3rd, and 5th graders.  On the BF website I see they suggest using the guides recommended for the oldest student and adjusting it for the younger student (http://bfbooks.com/Info-FAQ/Get-Started …scroll down).  So we would be using Early American Intermediate and Geography Through Literature.  I know I can combine the 3rd and 5th graders into those guides but what about the 1st grader?  Would I teach him separately using the guides recommended for grade 1?  That would be Early American History Primary and Teaching Character Primary.  The problem with this besides not being able to combine all my children, is what do I do when my 3rd grader gets to 11th grade and he has finished all the guides yet has 2 years left of school?  I thought about combining all 3 of them into the recommendations for grade 3, which are History of Science and Teaching Character Intermediate but then my 5th grader wouldn’t study Ancient History until high school, because he would have to jump ahead to the high school guides, skipping 2 of the junior high ones, including Ancient History.  I just don’t know how to make this work…  I really want to be more CM than we have been and I think BF History would help.

First, you aren’t going to cover everything evenly for every child if you want to combine ages (meaning, one child may not get ancients 3 times in 12 years while another child may only hit middle ages once, etc). Which, in case you are wondering, is perfectly okay.

I used an Intermediate BF guide(my 6th, 5th, 3rd, 2nd, K, with 3 tagalong youngers) last year and a Senior Guide (just my 10th grader, who works independently).  They were medieval times. The Intermediate books are going to be above your 1st grader for sure, and your 3rd may do well or struggle with them, depending on if you plan on doing most of the books as read alouds to everyone or if you expect them to do a large chunk of the reading.

What I did was read aloud the books to all kids who could enjoy them (this varied by book). I also found picture books/younger kid books on similar topics at the library for when a BF book was just too much for some of my younger ones to enjoy. For example if the guide had me reading from George Washington’s World then I would have George Washington by the Daulaires available to read and look at with my younger kids. It was a lot of reading on my part, but ended up being a good year.
