Can anyone give some feedback on these books by C.S. Forester?

I love the movies w/Iaon Gruffuld and am wondering at what age the books are appropriate; or are they completely inappropriate-being full of coarse material and bad language?

    Thanks

Hmmm…my husband and I have read the series and LOVED them.  Up until he starts cheating on his wife and all.  Then we DON’T love them and I yelled while reading the books – “How could you?  This is not who you are!” and so on.  I think it’s book 4 or 5 that he does that.  I’m not sure, however, that I’d had them over to a kid.  A teen, probably.  Perhaps 14 and up?  Maybe a bit younger if they are used to the language (vocabulary) and style of that era.  The language isn’t bad (that I remember) but there are some intense flogging scenes, battle wounds and such.  We’re planning on having the boys read the first few books in high school.

I’ve heard that Mr. Midshipman Easy is a good alternative, but haven’t read it yet.  Downloaded it for free on my Kindle though.
