We’re moving back out to the country and we plan to raise some animals and get back to gardening. We’ve been on a tiny lot for the last three years and we are thankful for the opportunity to have some land again. I’m searching for a Yahoo group or something similar to join to have a place where I can ask questions about raising animals. Suggestions, please?
My favorite online go-to is the Keeping a Family Cow website. They have a fabulous forum with knowledgable folks to find out about all things cow and any other homesteading question you might have.
As a child, I wanted a cow. Now we are in the country and could have one. But then I suppose there would be no more vacations, right? Plus I wonder how much it would cost.
As a child, I had a cow — over a thousand of them actually. I really don’t need to go down that road again especially since we have a dairy where we purchase raw milk for $2/gal and is less than a mile form us.
We are getting ducks this week though and we might do chickens and meat goats. I think we’d like to avoid something that needs to be milked every day.
Animals – every homestead needs chickens! Great place to start 🙂 We do chickens, pigs, rabbits. We have had ducks. We grow a big market garden and I sell veggies and eggs through my small subscription based CSA. http://sunshinefordinner.com/
I wish we could have a cow but we don’t have a big fenced grassy area for her, and I have access to free raw goat milk from a relative. If we didn’t I would probably keep some milk goats. Cow milk for $2 a gallon! That is crazy cheap!
Have fun! It’s a wonderful life
