One of the reasons I am choosing to homeschool is because of the way piblic schools approach education. I read an article once about how public schools began and evolved. In it was information about the original goal of public education and why it was set up the way it was – something about mass producing people for the work force. Anyway, do any of you know where I could find this type of site/article/etc? I’m not looking to find that exact article but just the general information in it. I appreciate your help!
I don’t know of a small article on this topic, but there is an excellent whole book on it! The author is a former public school teacher named John Taylor Gatto. Here is the site:
It is a fascinating topic to me…and one that so few know or will speak about. I can highly recommend the DVD “Children of Caesar” by Voddie Baucham from vision forum. Also, A Weed in the Church by Scott Brown is a good read. It talks about the origin of Public School, then its evolution to “Sunday School” and modern day “Youth Group”.
Agreed Vision Forum is full of amazing sources like this. That is were I learned a lot about these topics and many others. It is also why my husband and I started keeping our children with us in church. Also check out Dewey and the other “fathers” of education…their underlying philosophies are downright scary. Oh, and I know where I got alot of info on it…F.A.C.E. Foundation for American Christian Education. There are many many reason to stay away from the public government schools…many. Also, I found Voddie Baucham’s blog or something online…ah here it is…Western Conservatory…the Botkin family…under articles I just typed in school…and here you go…http://www.westernconservatory.com/search/node/school . Maybe that is what you are looking for?!
Oh yeah. It apparently brings to light the horrible state American schools are in. I think the title is saying that the schools are “waiting for Superman” and need him.
Thank you for all the information and links you provided!
Can I ask why you now keep your kids with you in church though instead of having to wait to read info about it? Haha. I’m intrigued and curious and kind of excited because for no *real* reason I want my chikdren with me in church. Is it Sunday School itself? Or…?
We’ve seen Waiting for Superman. It profiles several families who try to improve the education their children are getting–many by trying to get into charter schools. I think it’s worth viewing for ANY parent concerned about the quality of our public education system. I do not think the producers are necessarily pro-homeschooling but they are very frank about the failures of the public system.
There is one that I personally liked better than Waiting for Superman. It is called The Cartel. If you are a netflix subscriber you can download instantly. Although our children are not in public school it does impact us greatly. Where I live a LARGE portion of my property taxes are for the school district and when you stop and think of how the money is ‘wasted’ and my family doesn’t even participate in a subpar school system it is maddening.
about children with you in church and the whys…it is very personal for each family…but a lot of the different reasons can be found here…http://www.ncfic.org/
we actually went to a family integrated church when we were in Phoenix…it was wonderful…they don’t have one where we are…but we have found a great church and we have the support of the pastor and his family in keeping our children with us…though we are different than others. It has taken quite a bit of training …and will probably continue to take plenty of training! but it is worth it for us.
Since starting that thread, we have made a permanent decision to keep our children with us in church. It has been well worth it. Ds 7 1/2 is now taking sermon notes on his own, without any prompting from dh or me. Both children (ds 7 1/2 and dd almost 6) participate in the singing and always get very excited when a song is sung that they are familiar with. Daddy plays in the praise band, so we sit up close to the front, and they enjoy watching him as well.
Hope that helps,
Lindsey
