Our children’s librarian is asking for input on library programs that would benefit our homeschool community. Specifically for grades 1-12 since we already have many programs that cater to preschool aged children. Someone has suggested a monthly literature club for high school aged in which the literary work being studied is examined closely in a group setting. We did have a knitting class, but too few people attended, so that program had to be dropped. I am thinking a poetry composition class for middle school aged would be nice, as I enjoyed learning to write poems and studying different poem formats in middle school. Any other suggestions from you CM parents?

Oh my goodness – A geography club sounds SO COOL. (I’m pretty sure my 10th grade self is yelling out NERD to my 30 year old self….)
Our local library often has the local zoo bring in an animal and do a presentation on it. They have an art club (kids team up with local artists and encourage one another, help them learn a technique, etc.) and a lego club(Ours is more of a free for all, but you could have one more structured like the one on Currclick).
My hometown library has a Dangerous Book for Boys Club, where they pick a project and work together on it. They also had a chess club when I was a kid.

Our local libraries have done book clubs (reading literature and discussing), a how to use the Dewey decimal/library class, creative writing, and Lego Club. Geography would be fun, as would poetry or essay/research writing.

Wouldn’t it be great if locals that speak second/third languages would meet with the kids to practice conversational skills?!?

That would be great. It can be so difficult to find opportunities for conversation practice when learning another language.

Ours has or has done in the past:
Reading to therapy dogs
book clubs for different ages or even different genre in each age
Lego build days (themed)
Science topic days
Career exploration days with guest speakers/presenters
American Sign Language classes
Movies and Literature group – read the book, watch the movie, then discuss both.
Art classes where they try different styles/media.

Thank you for these suggestions. Since my dc are still young, I was having trouble coming up with ideas past preschool story hour. I am going to put these into a list to present to the librarian next week. My 6 yo especially likes the Lego club idea. Also, I haven’t needed to use a card catalog or the Dewey Decimal system since grade school ( most books I check out from the library are requested and waiting for me on the hold shelf when I arrive), so I probably need to attend a class like that myself.
