Thanks for those descriptions!  You are absolutely right.  Sometimes I just group them all together and that’s not fair.  Sorry for that mistake.

One of the moms in our co-op just finished a nature study class this year. She tried to get the kids outside each week regardless of (most) weather. They made a group nature notebook that was on display for our spring concert but I would think that each child having a notebook is very do-able/preferred. They found leaves, flowers, made rubbings, etc. I’ll get some more specifics from her(my kids weren’t in the class unfortunately). Two of them had her Colonial Life class and they made beautiful lap books.

Many of the families do AO so I think they would like to follow that guide, along with using the Handbook of Nature Studies. I just ordered it, I’ve been wanting to for a long time anyway. How much time is needed each week to do an inside/instructional period followed by outside nature notebooking? One hour? An hour and a half?

Melinda, we are having 45 minutes for nature study total. Here is our schedule to show how our day runs.

9:00-9:30 Matins (Prayer, pledge, hymn, folk song & share time) – entire group infant – adults

9:30-10:30 elective hour (choices for all kids form 1 and up)

10:30 – 12:00 CM feast (30m artist, composer, poet; 15m drill and snack, 45m nature study) in forms (~10-12 kids per group) and moms will sit in to learn and participate at least 1/2 year

12:00 – 1:00 elective hour 2 (choices for all kids form 1 and up)

Here are some good nature ideas – http://cminthebluegrass.weebly.com/nature-study-workshop.html

Wow, missceegee, that is great to see. Can I ask if you have a website for your group that we could look at or other info.?

I have always had a desire to have something like this with a true CM focus where we live and it would be so nice to see what others are doing. Thank you for sharing your schedule.

Benita, my website is http://www.rchajax.com. I’ve been updating it lately.

We’re a work in process. Next year will be our 5th and we will have 30 families and almost 70 kids. Hope it’s helpful.

    Yes, thanks for sharing!

I was thinking how great a Shakespeare class would be in a co-op. It would work well because it could be read in a group, with different children reading different parts on different days. Would work well for teens! At the end maybe there could be a movie viewing of the play, or they could even act it out.

We’ve done a complete Shakespeare play in the past and are offering a Survey of the Bard next year. Last year we did a 2 hr drama and a behind the scenes class for Sir Malcolm and the Missing Prince. We had a big production in April. It was great but a bit much.
