Hello all!  I’m a new homeschooling mommy of two.  My son is 8 and daughter is 11.  Next year they will be in “3rd and 7th” grade.  I pulled them from PS about a year ago and have taken our time to find our ‘vision’.  I’m so intrigued with CM but overwhelmed at the same time.  I think we are going to start AO this fall but I’m not sure of two things.

    1) Is it possible to combine lessons with ages as far apart as mine?

    2) What level should we start at?

Thank you in advance for any support.  Bless you.

Hi there and welcome! I have 2 children, ages 21 and 14, and we have been homeschooling with Charlotte Mason’s methods for 13 years.

AO would have you put your children in different years for their main courses of study but keep them together for “the riches” like picture study, Shakespeare, Plutarch, composer study, poetry, hymn study, etc.

Simply Charlotte Mason would have your family studying together for “the riches” as well as history, geography and Bible. Then older students would have additional assignments in these areas. Your children would be doing different things for science as well and math goes without saying.

I would join the AO forum for advice on which years to start with. I would definitely recommend starting a year behind your students’ grade levels. AO is very advanced. I used year 6 for my daughter’s 7th grade curriculum and it was a good fit. We really enjoyed it.
