I found this recipe after starting to use Bentonite clay and finding out about all the benefits. I ordered the other ingredients and can’t wait to try this.
I will be interested to see the video. We buy a really good toothpaste. It is expensive but you only have to put a few drops on your toothbrush.I buy it for about $13. at a health food store. I have to go a little drive (2 hours) to buy it. So, I would like to make some for those days in between. If I could find something comparable. I know it is cheaper if you buy it from the company in the case and I thought about doing that.
The stuff I use is called Natura dentizyme you can go to naturaRX.com to look at their benefits. It naturally removes plaque. I also have to say from experience when I ran out of it I went back to using Crest for a short time. My gums started bleeding within the week. I went back to the natura and they stopped. I haven’t found a product that I have liked as well. I will pay the extra money for a good product if I know I am benefiting from it. I will also try other products without fluoride and chemicals just to see if they compare.
Thanks for mentioning this site. I will also try it. I thought I would mention this product also. Just in case you don’t like the other one and are looking for something that works good.
Blessings and let me know if the new stuff works. K?
We use this…http://www.earthpaste.com/ and love it. We will be putting together our own version when it runs out, since we have some Redmond Clay in the cabinet.
I wouldn’t worry too much about the plastic container since I assume you’re using plastic/nylon brushes?
If you are looking for an alternative, we have used these: http://lifewithoutplastic.com/boutique/plasticfree-wooden-toothbrush-adult-p-400.html They are different and you have to be really careful not to scrub too hard because it will really damage gums. If you use a soft circular motion, you’ll be fine. That said, our kids couldn’t figure that out and we ended up going back to (shudder) plastic for them. Ick, but what can ya do? btw, these are wooden with pig hair bristles. Why does that not gross me out as much as synthetics? Guess I’m weird.
Since we eliminated as much plastic as possible from our lives a few years ago, I also thought of using these but haven’t tried them. Interesting idea though… http://www.naturaltoothbrush.com/
Just wondering if you guys are using some sort of spatula to take the toothpaste out with. Only a thought but transferring of germs from toothbrush to toothpaste and back came to mind. So, I thought I might add…. You may want to buy a small metal butter knife. Oh, another thought. Silver is good at killing germs. Maybe storing it in a silver container with a silver spatula/butter knife. Oh, I also had another idea. I bought one of those old glass butter dishes at a garage sale. You could probably pick up one of those with a pretty lid.
chocodog for this particular recipe you should not use any metal because of the Bentonite clay.
I made it last night, I can tolerate the taste but not my kids, it tastes salty (and I didn’t even put salt and half the baking soda) and the clay doesn’t taste too good either!!
I am thinking to add Xylotol and I don’t know what else??
I am a little desapointed, used a lot of cinnamon and you can’t even taste it.
As far as the container I have not figure out what to use since using a container and have everyone dip their toothbrush in doesn’t sound like a good plan to me, especially when someone is sick.
xylitol is an excellent idea because it actually helps prevent bacteria from attaching to the teeth when used (same for nasal passages if it’s used in a nasal spray).
For a jar, how about one of those sugar jars with the spoons attached/hanging on the side? Or a small sugar jar with a spoon in it? You could probably find both at a thrift store.
In the mean time, a jelly sized mason jar or half-pint jar and use a small silicone spatula/spoon or plastic spoon.
I’d like to make toothpaste, but the daily use of baking soda concerns me in regards to the enamel. We used baking soda once a week as a child, but I was always told not to use it daily.
I flavor mine with our essential oils. I use Thieves or peppermint, and the children like orange (blech!). We have used toothpicks before, rather than dipping our toothbrushes in the container, to address the transferring of germs issue. Honestly, though, the kids went back to dipping their brushes in the jar, and I figured they had been rubbing them on the same toothpaste before anyway! Difference is, our homemade stuff has those great essential oils to help kill the bugs!
Well I did add the Xylotol and some essential oils, still not a winer for my kids! Maybe I’ll have more success w/the next batch.
Rachel I read some of the comments on youtube about this recipe and she said to ommit the salt and use about half the baking soda for sensitive teeth. I guess you could not put any at all if you wanted to.
