With Lent starting tomorrow I am going to try and make more homemade snack for my family. We were doing awesome and then the economy got tight my DH isn’t working like he use to and we just couldn’t afford to buy all that great stuff. But my heart is telling me that we need less snacks and then in turn more good ones. So I am looking for either good receips or websites to go to. Also, I have a son who is glueten & casein free so it makes things really hard at times to make something we all can eat. So if you have any helpful advice let me know.

FYI – we eat lots of fruits and vegi’s soo that’s not a problem, I’m talking when we are craving something sweet 😆

Hi there, Misty! Here are some things that our family loves – as far as sweets go….

    Peanut Butter Protein Balls

Ours boys LOVE these! They are a healthy snack but oh so tasty and sweet. We usually roll them into balls and no baking required.

1/2 cup honey (or less to taste)

2/3 cup natural peanut butter (nonhydorgenated)

    1 cup chocolate-flavored protein powder

3 1/2 cups crispy rice cereal (we use Perkeys Nutty Flax cereal)

Special addition could be diced raisens or dates but we usually leave these out.

Mix honey, peanut butter, and protein powder together completely (this is easier if the honey and peanut butter are room temperature). slowly add the rice cereal and carefully stir until mixed ( I usually use my clean hands to stir it up ). Use a cookie baller or your hands to roll the mixture into balls of desired size. Regrigerate the balls for about 30 minutes to firm them up.

    Peanut Butter Carob Balls

    1/2 cup carob powder

    1/2 cup honey

    1/2 cup crunchy peanut butter

    1/2 cup raw sunflower seeds

    1/2 cup sesame seeds

1/2 cup oats or quinoa flakes

    1/4 cup unsweetened coconut

Special addition: 1/4 to 1/2 cup flaxseed meal

Mix all ingredients together by hand. Form the batter into bite-size balls and roll them in shredded unsweetned coconut.

We do lots of homemade trail mixes; example as follows…mix

    raisens

    cranberries

    walnuts

    pecans

    pumpkin seeds

    soy nuts

    unsweetened carob chips

    a few semisweet chocolate chips

I’m sure you’ll get lots more ideas. 🙂

    Bless you!

    Hey Heather,

Those look like great snacks..I want to try those protein balls. I haven’t used the protein powder before..is that something like the protein drink mix..can you get it at any grocery store? or just at Whole Foods/Wild Oats type store?

Sorry Misty, everything that I make that are wholesome treats has Wheat flour in it. Well, I guess our granola doesn’t have wheat but it has oats, butter, honey, vanilla and then whatever dried fruit you want to add, or better yet add fresh blueberries. We use it as a cereal but you could always eat it as a snack too.hummm I feel like eating some now!!

    1 stick of butter

    1/2 cup of honey

1 tsp vanilla (as much as you want)

    4 cups of rolled oats

    Nuts, raisins, coconut as desired

Melt together butter, honey and vanilla. Pour over oats and stir well to coat. Bake at 400 for 10 min. Stir and bake 5 min. more if desired. * If you boil the butter and honey for about 1 min. before pouring over the oats and bake in a deeper pan they will stick together more like a granola bar.

    Hope this is helpful.

Shelly, that treat sounds wonderful ~ I think we’ll put that on our menu for next week. 🙂

Yes, the protein powder is the powdered drink mix but we’ve found it can be used for so much more. We buy the whey protein mix (not soy) and can find it at our local grocery store. However, you might have better luck at a health store if you have one close by.

    Have a great day! 🙂

Granola is a great snack. I also make my own yogurt for snack time to put granola on top of. Deviled Eggs are a good one also. Oh and the yogurt makes great smoothies!!!

My kids love peanut butter crackers, and if you’re craving sweets you can add a dab of honey. They’re very inexpensive, even buying organic peanut butter and crackers. My eldest is allergic to peanuts, so she has sunflower seed butter & crackers. We also do cheese & crackers with a bit of pepperoni. Not sweet, but it fills that nibbly craving beautifully.
