I am looking for something other than CM online organizer that is a good organizer source/schedule maker/report producer etc. Maybe I don’t use the organizer like I should but I am not sure I get that much out of it. I would appreciate some suggestions/insights
I have been using the SCM organizer for more than 6 mths. I think what I don’t like is that sometimes I just need to put down that I read one chapter of a book or part of a chapter. If I check off that I finished the assignment and then later do a little bit of the same book, I have to go-back and reschedule it. It seems to me that the SCM organizer works when you have the same schedule week to week. Due to my work, I need to be flexible and it seems to be that I keep having to re-enter things or spend a lot of time changing the day I did something on the organizer. I am not particularly tech savvy so perhaps I am doing it wrong. I just have one child to keep up with. I could see it working better if I had a few kids but it seems to be a lot of work to me and that is the part I don’t like.
Yes, the organizer is easier if your schedule is the same from week to week. Honestly I think that any other program that organizes your homeschool work and creates records is going to have at least as much work to it.
Some tips for things that are occasional….
you can schedule it on a non-school day – then have it shown by telling it to show resources not normally scheduled. (or have it scheduled on the school day – but close it up if you aren’t going to do it that day.
Or, if you aren’t going to do it for a while, go into the scheduler and change the Start date to that later date. You don’t lose the records of you working on it – but it doesn’t clutter up the plans at all. (And you can change it at any time when you are ready to work on it….)
I’ve only changed days of the week twice. Once, we changed our schedule and had the ability to move some things to a different day. Then, I recently moved several subjects/resources to weekend days per Suzukimom’s suggestions. This allowed me to keep resources “on the shelf” so to speak since we needed to drastically cut down the subjects we’re doing for a time. Otherwise, only a daily/weekly basis, I have tended to open the “not scheduled for today” area and check off things we’ve done out of order, or closed up things we weren’t going to be able to complete on a particular day and make it up later. There’d be no way I could manage changing things each day just because we didn’t do something on a particular day, or completed some lessons that weren’t scheduled. That would make me coocoo. If this is what you’re doing, I’d encourage you to just open/close the subjects actually completed on a particular day until you notice if there’s a particular day(s) that works best for certain studies and move them based on the most frequently studied day(s).
If you worked on a chapter of a book, you can just check off “worked on” for the time being. Then, if you finish the chapter later in the day, you can go back & mark it “finished.” Or, if you finish a chapter (& mark it as such), then start a new chapter later that day, you can also mark the new chapter as “worked on.”
I am using Homeschool Planet (Homeschool Buyers Co-Op) too, but the SCM reports are much better (so far….I know Homeschool Planet is working on enhancing reports).
I’m sure the CMO is wonderful, but the iPad is way more convenient for me than the computer. (But then maybe CMO is for mobile devices also. I don’t know.) The customer service is wonderful if you ever have a question. If you purchase this app, I highly reccomend an afternoon or evening just “playing” with it to know how to use it best. I originally stopped using it about 2 weeks after I purchased it (about a year ago) because I thought I preferred paper. This year I took time to try out all the different functions and find it is just what I need to keep our school time organized. You can also use it to create grades if you choose.
Honestly, Rhonda, the CM organizer handles what you’re describing beautifully. I have purchased and used EVERY other program mentioned plus some that weren’t. I’ve used paper and pen to make my own. I continue to return to the CM organizer bc of its simplicity and flexibility. Nothing else comes close. I have 2 papers that help me in addition – 12 week term chart and a weekly schedule. The term chart is where I break down resources into how much to cover per week over the term. The weekly schedule chart helps us to know at a glance what we are to work on each day. I don’t fret if I miss something, but I like the framework these 2 papers give me while working with the CM organizer. Going forward, I intend to use my two paper reference charts with the flexibility of the CMO very happily.
