Do any of you homechool year around and if so what does your schedule look like for breaks? Thinking we may take this appoach but need so ideas. Thanks
This is our first year. We homeschool year round, from Jan-Dec. Currently it’s 4 days a week, but we may spread over 5 days in the summer and then go back to 4 in the fall. So far the only breaks I have planned are a week off when our church does VBS, and then the last few weeks of Dec. We have time to take off if we manage a vacation this year, or if we just need a break, but those sren’t scheduled yet.
Thanks for asking, looking forward to seeing how others schedule their years.
Yes, I do. My terms are Sept – Dec, Jan – Apr, and may – Aug. I plan 3 months or 12 weeks of work and give us 16 weeks or 4 months to do it. We take off when we want or need.
same as missceegee…..i schedule 3 terms of 12 weeks each, but I do not puts dates on my schedule, and we take about 4 months to do each term. We have had several impromtu weeks off of school for various reasons, and it’s great to know I don’t have to rearrange the school schedule to take a week off.
We are going back to our schedule of 6 weeks on 2 weeks off. We were the most productive during this schedule. I try to schedule around a couple holidays, for example, we traditionally break from June 21st (the official first day of summer) until the Monday after Independence Day. And we also break in November and December because it is a challenge for ME to concentrate while I am in holiday mode. The exception is that the children are required to do math every day (except weekends) whether or not we are on holiday.
I had planned this year, for the first time, to be something scheduled with some weeks of work and then one or two weeks off. We’re supposed to be starting our third term this week but really, this scheudule isn’t working for me. I had hoped it would inspire us to work diligently during our ‘work’ weeks knowing we’d have some time off afterwards, but so far whenever our ‘off’ weeks came around I didn’t feel like we had done enough during our work weeks to grant it. At the beginnign of the year I called those ‘off’ weeks our ‘catchup’ week and we’d do whatever we had missed the previous work period but then I got even less organized and I haven’t looked at our schedule much since…Thanksgiving.
I’ve heard of the ‘do 3 months of work in 4 months’ plan many times before and now I think that may be what we more naturally gravitate to. I think for these last two terms I’m going to ‘plan’ things that way and see if it seems a better fit.
In general, though, we do work year round but seem to take generous days off whenever desired. Spring seems to be our most ‘un-academic’ time bc we spend so much time outdoors in the woods and in creeks. ‘Real’ learning is being done but not much book learning. I love that we, as homeschoolers, can follow whatever we are inspired to do.
My boys are in 2nd grade so I’m sure as they get older this will change many times.
We are doing 3 weeks on 1 week off. This is our second month with this schedule and we love it. We are already planning year round but would def need to per district standards number of days per year.
We are in Florida so for us it makes more sense to spend as much time as we can outside during the spring because it is just too hot over the summer. I’m thinking maybe allowing more time to get the 12 weeks done during March/April/May and less summer break (only planned 4 weeks anyway)
We are similar to missceegee in that we start in September and do 12 weeks on, 4 weeks off, except for the holidays when we take Thanksgiving to New Year off. Our other breaks end up being the month of April (which is good for us because we live in the country and need the spring break for gardens, etc.) and the end of July and the month of August.
I love going year round. I have noticed that none of us get burnt out as easily since right when we’re starting to get tired the term is over. And we don’t do any schoolwork at all during our break. I think of it as “masterly inactivity” and I always notice huge leaps in my children’s academic abilities after these breaks.
I planned our year around the weather, we love being outside so our year runs June through the middle/end of April, then that’s our “summer” break until the middle of June. We also take a break in Sept for the nice weather, and one over christmas/new years. I love it, we can have shorter days because we have plenty of days to do school!
We go year ’round also. We go June through May with 3 – 15 week semesters, 4 days per week. We take a week off every 7 or 8 weeks and then two weeks at the end of May if we haven’t used them up in other ways. This allows us to be flexible both in weekly and semesters too! We love it!!
