For the early grades (mainly 2nd) do you use a spine at all for history, or just read-alouds for a given time period?  I already have several books for read alouds, just not sure if I should add a spine to help it flow better and they can see how each is connected to the other books.

I like Child’s History of the World by Hillyer

We recenly started using A Picturesque Tale of Progress by Olive Beaupre Miller and love it.  It is out of print but can be found reasonably priced.

We’ve loved Joy Hakim’s series The History of US for American History.

Either Child’s History of the World or A Picturesque Tale of Progress. I do both the spine and read alouds and independent readings.

We’re on our second year of using A Living History of Our World: America’s Story (there are 3 volumes) LOVE LOVE LOVE it!

We are using A Living History of Our World: America’s Story (Queens Homeschooling).  This is our first year using it, along with the journals.  We love it!!  We are in vol 1, which is early american indians through the gold rush.

Would A Living HIstory of Our World be suitable for K/1st, or is it better for kids who are a bit older?

I think you could use it for that age, also older.  My boys are 3rd/4th.  I’m reading it aloud to them, but my 4th grader will also read some of it independently.  The journal that Queen Homeschool sells with it might be too much for your younger ones.  So far my boys have enjoyed it.  We are also using the Stories of America vol 1 book that SCM has along with it.

We are using A Living History of Our World vol1 with a 2nd and K … it’s very acccessible to a range of abilities. My second grader enjoys the journal, but I don’t expect that of my K’er. It is lovely.

Is A Living History of Our World from a Christian perspective? We’ve tentatively settled on Hillyer but I’d really prefer something distinctly Christian.

Yes, A Living History of Our World is from a Christian perspective.

    Blessings,
