Okay, I think I’m a little messed up with history.

If I follow the path we’re in my 12 yo will finish out highschool in module 5. If I switch gears and start over, literally, in the Ancients then he will finish 12th grade in mod. 6.  We were planning on doing mod 5 this coming year but when I counted out the years he falls one year short.

Any suggestions??  Is it really important to finish highschool in that time period?? He would be our first graduate and does have plans for a higher education (not sure yet for what exactly) and we’d like to give him the best chance we can.

If we need to switch gears I will need to get to shopping right away, but that’s okay.  Also, I think that if I explain the change to my kids they will understand so I’m not worried about confusing them with the lack of chronological order we woud be jumping ship fromWink.  Thanks in advance, everyone.

It doesn’t matter where you end.  Your 12 yo will get everything at least once over the next 6 years.  When doing family work together, the kids will join in or graduate out wherever the family happens to be at the time… no problems.

The only reason it might be a problem is if your state requires certain things at certain times.

And even with that… my understanding is it really doesn’t matter what your State wants…. your only concern is really what any post-secondary schools might want….  Read the info on HSLDA on that…  http://www.hslda.org/highschool/diploma.asp

I agree–it doesn’t really matter where you end.  Suzukimom is also right in that the really important thing for a college-bound student is what the college requires.  From the ones we’ve researched, it appears that two to four history credits are a good idea–since we do plenty of other social science work we have chosen to do two history credits for the high school years.  Many schools are going to want ONE of those credits to be an American history credit, so it is wise to plan enough work that you can assign one American history credit sometime during the 9-12 years.  But that shouldn’t be all that hard.

One good thing is to think about some possible schools as you make your high school plans and see what they want to see in an incoming student.  We’ve looked ourselves at what sometimes feels like hundreds Laughing but I’m pretty sure it wasn’t actually that many.  At any rate, we’ve left MANY stones unturned.  (Don’t tell my ds, he’ll want to visit them all!!!!)  But as for time period, no, it makes no difference where you finish.

    Thanks suzukimom.

I don’t really want to switch gears (I’ve purcased almost everything for mod 5), but would if it seemed to fit better for him in highschool.  But, even with that said, I realize that since every child is not the same age/grade when you start then someone will finish in an odd time period.

    Thanks again.

Thanks bookworm. I was typing at the same time as youSmile.  I so appreciate the input as I know this son really expects us to plan for college (well, he knows he has to do the work but we’re the parents with the responsibility to “spread the feast”).  He would be upset if we willingly left out subjects/topics to make life easier only to make it more difficult later on.  He’s not a brainiac, but does want to experience college, or so he says.

    Whew!   I feel better now.
